Next on #ManagingAsia, I travelled to Taipei, Taiwan to talk to Horace Luke, founder & CEO of Gogoro who is taking the world's two-wheeler EV market by storm, first by developing and creating from scratch a smart battery swapping solution, and designing and building his own e-scooters. Since launching Gogoro in 2011, the Nasdaq listed Taiwanese unicorn now has 13,000 battery swapping stations in nine countries and its proprietary batteries fit not only his own branded electric scooters but also a range of e-scooter brands such Yamaha, Aeon, and Suzuki Taiwan. Ask Horace anything about his business and you know he is the kind of founder that is involved in every single detail of the company, from concept, to design, to production, to launch. He energy is infectious and he drives not only himself but his employees as well, with a sense of purpose. Nothing stops him and he just keeps going till he finds the answer. Horace himself gave me a tour of his battery production facility in Taichung, where no TV crew has been allowed in, to film. We were able to see up close the entire battery production process, from the stacking of individual battery cells to the final battery pack, all done with 46 different robots. His grand vision is to change the world of urban mobility and tackle the pollution in densely populated cities and actually calculates how many hundred tons of CO2 he has taken out of the atmosphere. Dubbed the "Elon Musk of the East" and the "Tesla of Scooters", Horace laughs at the comparison and says he would rather be known as the "Android of EVs", opening up his technology platform to other EV makers. Looking back at 2023, it’s clear that we've been on a thrilling and challenging circuit. 🚨 For me, 2023 was a year of resilience. One of our most significant challenges was facing rejections and being ghosted by over 30 VCs. It felt like we were stuck in the pit lane, watching others speed by. 🚀 Yet, in the spirit of F1, where every lap is an opportunity for greatness, we didn't let these setbacks keep us off the track. We kept tweaking our strategy, and refining our pitch, and in the end, we hit a milestone – we found our revenue path and saw people genuinely benefitting from Nesya Tenang AI. ✨ Seeing GenZ's lives improve was the moment that proved we're on the right track ✨ We also learned a valuable lesson about setting our goals 🎯 . Initially, we thought we were aiming high enough, but as the year unfolded, we surpassed our own expectations. And then despite occasional differences in perspective among co-founders, we remained united by our shared vision. Day 2 of our Kaikaku visit continued on a high note! We had the pleasure of visiting Avex, one of the esteemed automotive suppliers. Based in Kuwana, Mie prefecture, Avex specialises in high precision engine parts for Daihatsu, Toyota, Aishin, and more for past 70+ years. What stood out was that both Tel-Mic and Avex's used the ‘Lehman Brothers’ crises to catapult them on a growth trajectory and resilience - when hit hard by the pandemic, they emerged stronger. Avex’s founder adopted the strategy of 'planned obsolescence' and embraced the change in relevance of their offerings. With this in mind they started identifying alternate industry segments, 10 yrs ago to stay relevant as ICE engines give way to electrification. To deliver the strategy, Avex's leadership has invested heavily in human capital development, creating a multi-skilled and flexible workforce that erases functional lines between operations, maintenance, and engineering. The in-house development of automation kaizen ideas has been so successful that operator-designed solutions are now driving new revenue streams. It's refreshing to see the integration of HR development activities such as upskilling and part-time working with clear business growth ambitions - a unique example in a world where human capital is often seen as a cost burden for short-term gains.
