Netflix had a problem: users were sharing access without paying for it. "While everyone at the company agreed it had to crack down on password sharing, the question was how." What happens in most companies when they don't know how to solve a problem? They listen to the highest paid person's opinion (HiPPO) and implement that idea. What did Netflix do? They analyse, debate, hypothesize and test. The CEO got it wrong and that's ok in an experiment driven organisation. source: Lucas Shaw (Bloomberg) #experimentation #decisionmaking
Reed Hastings has a great book about the netflix culture which dives into their thinking in more depth. Well worth a read
This is good, however they got huge backlash for it as well. Incidents of same family members not being able to access the account while travelling is one point they missed maybe.
So why did they go for the home based approach? 🤷🏼♂️
nice!!!! dont you love their size where they can just say: "ah well lets just use Latin America as a testground." The Latin American market is not so big that it will REALLY hurt when we get it wrong, but it is significant enough to be the be a dependable pilot for the rest of the world ;-) This is market leadership by a couple of miles.
Nice example! Thanks for sharing. An experiment a day keeps the Hippo away 😀
Thanks for sharing Kevin, this is going straight in my Swipe file for stakeholder management

1moSuch a good example, thanks for sharing Kevin. Also a good reminder that there are many other types of experiments that can be used e.g. Quasi experiments like this, where random assignment isn’t possible
