That 'Open to Work' Green Banner. ❇ Is it a sign of desperation? Not necessarily. In fact, it's a great way to let your network know that you're looking for new opportunities. After all, being laid off or having your company restructure is not your fault. ❇ Remember, LinkedIn is a networking site. That banner could catch the eye of someone you haven't talked to in a while. Who knows what opportunities that could lead to? ❇ Don't let that banner define you as a person. It's simply a way to let others know that you're on the job hunt. A few months ago, a former colleague, from a job I held over 15 years ago, reached out to me. Then a few weeks ago, I had a request for a job that matched her skill set, so I reached back to her about the opportunity. She was indeed interested in the job and interviewed. Networking can be that simple - keeping in touch with former coworkers and leaders. Networking is certainly more than that too but we can convince ourselves that networking is complicated and difficult. It's often not. It's as easy as reaching out to people to check in with them. See how they're doing. Ask about their lives. Keep up with them. The search for the perfect job can be a frustrating one. I've been on that journey myself, looking for a role that leverages my skills and fosters growth. Lately, it feels like I'm hitting dead ends at every turn. Whether it's the current market conditions, Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) filtering out resumes, or the ever-present question of having the right skill set, there always seems to be a reason why it's so challenging. It feels like all the opportunity is being sucked away, leaving me with nothing but a pile of rejection letters and a head full of self-doubt. Maybe there's a way out of this maze yet.
