#IITKResearchEcosytem   Like numerous world-class institutes of higher education, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur boasts of an impressive research and development infrastructure that has been built over a span of decades. The high-end labs and facilities provide extensive research support to the IITK research community.   With the vision of supporting the industry in its R&D, the Central Research Facilities (CRFs) at IITK are open to industry for use. Technopark IITK serves as a platform for our company members to easily utilise these resources for their R&D activities. Our member companies have made extensive use of these facilities. It also serves as a big attraction for industry. The idea is to strengthen the innovation ecosystem in the country by opening the existing research infrastructure for use and building new infrastructure, thus avoiding duplication and wastage of resources. This point has been reiterated by academia and industry at national and global level. Exclusivity as a goal, according to Namit Arora, an IIT Kharagpur alumnus and the author of ‘Lottery of Birth,’ is not problematic by itself – “In a modernizing country, it is important to build institutions that stand for excellence and high standards, which then has the effect of making them ‘exclusive.’ This is laudable as long as they are built equitably and serve the public good.” ⁠ ⁠ According to him, the IITs are not serving their intended purpose of producing nation-builders. “They’re notionally thrown open to all citizens,” adds Prof. Aloysius. But “These are all institutions of higher earning, not learning.”⁠ ⁠ Not everyone agrees that exclusivity is an acceptable goal to begin with. “Why are these institutions not looked at as Commons? Why are they exclusive, despite public money poured into it?” asks Swati Kamble, PhD, a researcher on caste on campuses. ⁠ The IIT crisis is not about the students who seemingly can’t cope – it’s about which students the institutes help thrive. As an institution which is in the forefront for fostering collaboration between academia, R&D institutions, and industries, the Somaiya Vidyavihar University is excited to host the Trio-Conclave. This brainstorming get-together aims to cultivate a more vibrant and result-oriented partnership among these key stakeholders, particularly MSMEs, in alignment with the vision of Vikasit Bharat@2047. How can innovative ideas lead to positive outcomes? Day before yesterday, I had the privilege of attending an exceptional lecture delivered by Prof. V Ramgopal Rao on "Challenges and Possible Solutions for Deficit in Academic Leadership". He was speaking at the Partha Ghosh Academy of Leadership, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, Kharagpur. He eloquently discussed the challenges and potential solutions related to academic leadership deficits, drawing from his experiences as the Director of IIT Delhi. Several aspects of his presentation captured my interest, but one significant highlight I'd like to emphasize is his innovative approach to enhancing the revenues of IIT Delhi. During his tenure, he ingeniously worked to boost IIT Delhi's revenues, comparing its financial models with other institutions in India and abroad, such as IIT Bombay, IISc Bangalore, Harvard, Stanford, and MIT in the USA. He highlighted the heavy reliance of Indian universities on government grants and resources, contrasting them with US universities that primarily generate revenue through sponsored research. To address this financial challenge, Prof. V Ramgopal Rao established an endowment fund, with alumni as the primary contributors. These successful alumni, many of whom lead unicorn companies, were encouraged to collaborate and support IIT Delhi. To motivate them, a unique initiative/incentive was introduced: anyone contributing a minimum of 5 crore rupees to the endowment fund would have the opportunity to have tea with the Honourable President of India with their spouse at Rashtrapati Bhavan. This innovative approach secured the approval of Honourable President of India, resulting in a remarkable evening where IIT Delhi raised a staggering 265 crore rupees for the endowment fund. The alumni are efficiently managing the fund, which is backing diverse initiatives at IIT Delhi.
