Back pain feels like someone has jammed hot needles into your spine. It stings, smarts, and aches, and doesn’t go away. It spoils your sleep, interferes with work, ruins your focus, and just makes it hard for you to live. If your back is hurting, you should sit up and take notice. After all, it’s a plea for help from your body. If left unaddressed, the pain can lead to spinal injury, muscle fatigue, loss of mobility, and even depression. When it’s not related to a medical condition or injury, back pain is most often brought about by poor posture. When we sit at our desks, we tend to hunch forward and put extra pressure on our backs. Inc. advises you to put your feet on the ground, sit straight, keep your monitor at eye level, and take frequent standing breaks to avoid back pain (or making an existing problem worse). Do you suffer from back pain? Tech neck? You're not alone, more than 27% of Americans over 45 years report suffering from chronic pain and 11% of whom have limited activities on a daily basis because of the pain. Back pain is the leading cause of disability around the world, in USA it accounts for $635 billion in medical costs and lost productivity. Rather than muting the problem with painkillers and further inactivity it’s time we take some conscious decisions in changing our lifestyle to safeguard our backs, our modern day quest for comfort bears a high price of pain especially as we age. It was an early onset of chronic lower back pain in my 20s that set me on the path of yoga, with dedicated practice I was able to fully heal and it was clear sharing these benefits became my life's work as everyone experiences the same sedentary lifestyle of sitting hours on end over a desk everyday. If you suffer from back pain try some of these: 1. Start your day with some simple stretches, stiffness can be high right out of bed so allow yourself to gently articulate your spine, gentle back bends and forward bends, lateral stretches and rotations are all very beneficial. 2. Use isometric exercises to engage inactive muscles, especially around the neck. Interlace your fingers and place them behind your head, gently push your head back into your hands and let your hands resist. This improves the strength around the neck, shoulders and upper back- best thing you can do it at your desk, whenever you feel some tension build up. 3. Practice deep breathing, while in bed first thing in the morning or just before you go to sleep give yourself a few moments to notice your breath. Place your hands on your belly and allow them to rise as you inhale and fall as you exhale, this is very calming on the nervous system and brings greater awareness to your core belt which protects the lower lumbar spine. Hope this helps, if you have any specific questions feel free to reach out! #stressmanagement #yogatherapy #backpain #techneck #corporatewellness
