The average monthly waste bills in most states from 2010 to 2015 ranged between 100 million and 150 million Naira. During this period, refuse dumps in peri-urban communities were regularly evacuated. However, between 2015 and 2022, the waste bill escalated, reaching 200-350 million Naira in some states. Over the past eight years, most state governors only covered waste evacuation for certain access routes. With the increasing costs of energy and operation, the expenses have soared to 350-500 million Naira monthly, amounting to an annual average of 6 billion Naira, rendering the current system unsustainable.
Despite attempts to address waste management, the existing system, coupled with the political dynamics, notably politicians using it for patronage and rewarding political loyalists, continues to exacerbate environmental issues related to waste disposal.
It is quite ironic to hear a state governor urging people to get arrested for their indiscriminate waste disposal practices. When citizens struggle to find viable alternatives to their waste problems, they resort to unconventional means to resolve them. It is imperative that governors provide a detailed breakdown of waste evacuation costs in their respective states and be transparent about the challenges they face. This transparency is essential in establishing an effective and sustainable waste management system.
