As a rule, I try to keep my posts here positive. And across the board, I try to contain my cynicism. It doesn't, as a rule, help me make things better. It's hard to find a non-cynical way to look at Microsoft's launch of Recall, though. It's so obviously a bad idea -- photograph the screen continually, convert the images to text, store the text in a SQLite database for easy search and retrieval. You'll get all kinds of sensitive info, easily found and exfiltrated by bad guys. Account numbers, balances, your electronic conversations with your doctor, login credentials, browsing history... I know plenty of folks who work at Microsoft. I like 'em. They're generally smart, thoughtful and genuinely care about users and security. There's no doubt that insiders screamed about the security implications of this new misfeature. The only way it appears on the market is if they were overruled. So why? Here's my cynical theory: Microsoft's invested billions in OpenAI, which trains stochastic parrots for a living. The training process is ravenous for data. And now every single Windows user is a rich data lode, steadily depositing food for those parrots. I have relatives who've fallen prey to social engineering scams, giving scammers access to their laptops. Recall would have vastly increased the damage. I used to run a pretty big company that bought a lot of Windows boxes. We worked with health care, financial services and government clients who extracted strong assurances of security from us. Recall would have broken those promises, damaging our customers and us. And most people I know prefer not to have Big Brother peering over their shoulder, especially when Big Brother is leaky. Recall, of course, plays the role of Big Brother in this evening's performance. I strongly advise that you not buy software from Microsoft. They can't be trusted.
