It was such a pleasure to facilitate a preparatory session for my favourite Disability Justice facilitators last week! What gives me faith that ADD International's new 10 year strategy will succeed? This photo from our strategy launch today sums it all up. It shows disability activists Run Vireak and Zenna Akuwa. The key to our strategy is that disability activists like Vireak and Zenna will be taking all the funding decisions. As Zenna told the participants in our launch about the participatory grant making she had been involved with: "It's more than Nothing about us without us. We own this!" It also shows Callum Aitken of People's Postcode Lottery. He spoke about how powerful and effective they have found long-term unrestricted funding to be and how it builds trust. Other funders like Ford Foundation are also backing our strategy. And funders are starting to work together to persuade other funders to provide fair and flexible funding. "Nothing About Us Without Us", a phrase first used by disability justice activists, highlights the need for an intersectional approach and leadership by those most impacted. Philanthropy can demonstrate inclusive leadership via staffing, advisory groups, and boards, emphasizing how lived experience strengthens grantmaking and deepens partnerships within the communities we, as funders, strive to support.
