Acoustics are mysterious to me, and I promote them. We have things like, NRC (Noise reduction coefficient), SAA (Sound Absorption Average) and STC (Sound Transmission Class). To an Acoustician the different numbers associated to these terms may be easily understood and for the rest of us may be a bit like trying to understand a language we are unfamiliar with. Here are some examples of NRC measurements. Heavy carpet over concrete is a .20 NRC and Gypsum (Drywall) has a .05 NRC. TerraCore Poly directly applied to Gypsum has an NRC of .80. What does all of this mean!!! If you are like me than this quick video will help to understand how acoustics can help with the office environment around you. Take a listen to what the difference between a .20 NRC and a .80 NRC sounds like. The video was created in a rectangle room measuring 52"x120" with a solid core door, 9' ceiling that has an ACT ceiling. The speaker sound and direction of the speaker were consistent in both tests. The Slow Death of HiFi: Over many years, HiFi quality sound has slowly eroded as manufacturers strive to meet customers' desires for sound that takes up as little space as possible but can do it all. The result is that many homes today have ended up with small metal or plastic cabinets filled with speaker units sticking out in all directions and, in reality, offering neither genuine HiFi nor true home theater sound. It's like in the classic tale by the Danish author H. C. Andersen, "The Emperor's New Clothes," where everyone convinces each other that the emperor is dressed in splendid clothes until a child says he's completely naked. In the same way, true HiFi sound has been stripped away layer by layer over a long time until many have drifted so far away from genuine HiFi experiences that they've almost forgotten what it should sound like. Here is a concept model of a sustainable piano. For digital pianos, PVC sheets with wood grain print are usually added to MDF but could we make MDF look beautiful by itself? We produced this model’s finish using only oil and wax. For the keys we used Grenadilla wood powder from off cut material as a result of clarinet production. Although these products aren't ready for large-scale production, all of these concepts and ideas are part of our goal to become sustainable in the music sphere.
