Jeff Booth's amazing and insightful book, "The Price of Tomorrow" argues that technology inherently leads to deflation by lowering the cost of goods and services and increasing productivity. However with existing political and economic systems failing to pass on these gains to society, it suggests there is a need for systemic reform to ensure that the benefits of technological progress are broadly and better shared. Technological Deflation: Innovations such as self-driving cars, virtual reality, AI and additive manufacturing will bring about significant cost reductions and efficiency gains, leading to deflationary pressure that our economic model cannot sustain through debt and currency debasement. Unsustainable Debt Growth: The current system attempts to counteract deflation by increasing debt, a method Booth argues is unsustainable. Technological progress makes this approach less viable over time, as it creates a negative feedback loop of growing interest obligations.
