💡Teaching Drones, CUAS & Tech

Unpopular - but right IMO. The integration of drones into combat capability needs to be holistic across many combat functions - targeting, ISR, Comms, Survivability, manoeuvre, shaping and more. Drones (and robotics) shouldn’t be “owned” by a single branch or corps. They should be decentralised in ownership and focused to achieve the main effort as part of a greater force.

For Army, just like the use of radios are an all-corps function, likewise the application of drones should be considered an all-corps responsibility. Supported with a well resourced coordination cell in each corps to help study and design implementation plans across corps application space, with each corps cell linking to a central drone/C-UAS coordination office in Army HQ. C-UAS needs to be joined at the hip with the application of drones, just like cyber security is when it comes to implementation of ICT systems. A central drone/C-UAS coordination office reporting at the heights of Chief of Army with an open door to DSTG, will ensure technology barriers are monitored and delt with swiftly, funding is set and integrated corps drone cells ensure agility in the UXS domain across all application spaces.

Are they a trade or a skill? Corps are a method of managing workforce against capability outcomes. Many uncrewed systems are so complex, including FPV racing warheads, that they need a specific workforce to deliver the capability. In contrast some done. I’m an advocate for both AeroVironment Switchblade & ReconRobotics, Inc. Throwbot exactly because almost any GAS troop can employ them to an incredibly high level of proficiency.

Broadly I agree that drones should be organic to all aspects of Army. My only point for consideration is that, due to system complexity and policy, drones can be difficult to operate, maintain and fly safely. Group 1 & 2 have the ability to be operated widely, but once we move into Group 3 and above there needs to be dedicated areas of an organisation to manage.

The reason Ukraine creates a separate drone force is not to consolidate ISR, strike and other capabilities. It is to create an actionable force design with a fresh mind. Guderian did not place mechanised unit under cavalry to make things “holistic”. The same needs to happen to drones and in particular strike drones. Military is full of traditionalists who will prioritise their favourite toys and remain blind to innovation. They would rather have more artillery than use a weapon that completely outperforms it in industrialisation and performance in 75% of scenarios. Whether this drone force sticks as a separate branch or gets itnegrated into something else.

Its a simple capability that needs to be considered as part of the JMAP/SMAP or IMAP.

Excellent point. One consideration is that concern about ownership is not entirely invalid b/c it's tied to funding, manning and responsibility. Having a 'drone branch' might not be the answer but having a unified, coherent vision for drone acquisition, training, development and deployment is essential.
