Thinking about one of the recent trends in this job market to seek people (whether product or design for example) who have specific experience in a sector / market (fintech being a common example right now), or type of business (eg SaaS). I get that in both cases it allows new people to be productive faster, because they understand the vocabulary and some of the challenges. For example in SaaS the nature of your customer is different than B2C, your access to them is different, the sales and retention funnel is different among many other things. The problem is, if you make this a key aspect of your hiring, you're selecting people who already think like you do. This isn't a great way to foster innovation or new thinking. This is something I've always been a bit of a contrarian about perhaps, because I always try to hire people with different domain experience. Even in complex domains if I'm hiring a permanent team member, I hope they'll easily be around long enough that their wider skills and expertise are more important than getting value in the first month. Maybe it says something about the culture and expectations of those companies who hire in this way.
