There are two things I never want to rely on when leading remote expeditions: HOPE, or LUCK. Just imagine: ‘With some LUCK, we will make it to the summit safely.’ ‘I HOPE we will make it back without any serious injuries.’ No. That is not the way. Luck and hope, while useful motivators sometimes, are not going to cut it when we are striving towards our boldest goals. To succeed, we need a plan. The unseen side of my 64-day Death Valley to Denali expedition were the months of painstaking planning which went into considering every minute detail of the journey.
