For eight years, Craig Wright has claimed to be the elusive creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. On Monday, in the swelling heat of a London courtroom, a trial began that will settle the question. Wright, flanked by his legal team, appeared relaxed in the opening stages of the trial, reclining in his chair. His demeanour reflected neither the stakes of the trial nor the forceful rhetoric of the plaintiff’s lawyer, who called Wright's claim to Satoshi-hood a “brazen lie.” The lawsuit Wright faces was brought by the Crypto Open Patent Alliance, a nonprofit consortium of crypto companies. COPA claims that Wright’s recent history of filing lawsuits predicated on his claim of being Bitcoin’s inventor has driven developers away. It is asking the UK High Court for a declaration, in effect, that Wright is not Nakamoto. A trio of related lawsuits brought by Wright will be bound by the ruling. If COPA is successful, Wright will have difficulty taking these claims any further. If Wright wins, and is successful in his own cases thereafter, he would be free to decide who is allowed to work on the Bitcoin codebase and under what terms the system can be used. The stakes, says a representative of the Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund, a nonprofit that is funding the defense of Bitcoin developers in a separate lawsuit filed by Wright, are “very high.” On Tuesday, Wright took to the witness box. His cross-examination—a so-far attritional process whereby COPA’s lawyer scraps with Wright over the contents and meaning of almost every exhibit—is set to run for days. WIRED will be covering the trial throughout. https://lnkd.in/e6zYKYUn

Following this one closely! The thing is, if you were Satoshi, you would be a fool to out yourself as many world governments would like to have a chat and possibly demonize you. Accessing Satoshi's addresses would be an easy way to prove it, but if I were Satoshi, I would lay low. There is no upside in seeking gratification for the ego.

The judge should open the trial by asking him to move a single coin. When he can't do it, summary judgment against him so he can quit wasting people's time and resources.

Was it Tesla or Edison who made electric light possible? Why the use of an Alias in the first place? Showing the first (written)code for the first Bitcoin made, seems to be an option. But it feels a little like the early days of the Internet, a Mexican claimed the URL: ibm.com, it did cost them a lot of money to get their name back, but there also was someone who tried to claim the use of the word "what" online... But if the Crypto code starts to interact with others, is it still "your code"?

Very few people believe that Craig Wright is Satoshi, so the trial is more likely to ID who is not Satoshi, not who is Satoshi. Wright's arguments that he is Satoshi are far from convincing. It's not up to anyone to disprove that he is Satoshi. It's up to him to prove that he is Satoshi. If he really wants to prove he is Satoshi, all he has to do is sign a message using Satoshi's key. All he has done up to this point is provide bogus excuse after bogus excuse for why he cannot do so. I hope the trial results in an injunction preventing Wright from making these claims and harassing people who disagree with him in court.

Look forward to seeing how this plays out! The courts will not let Wright make vague suggestions as he has done in the past. He was able to convince Andresen and Matonis but it seems like Ayre had a vested interest in Wright’s businesses. This could go either way Joel!

Good luck on deciding who’s allowed to work on BTC codebase and under which terms the system can be used!
