After 11 years at Meta (formerly Facebook), where I contributed as an Engineer and Engineering Manager, last year's layoffs were a pivotal moment, prompting a pause and reflection on my 25-year journey in technology. Seeking #recruiters from the #gaming industry in need of a Community Manager! I was a GM on Ultima Online and EverQuest in the far back mists of time, and continue to cooperate with Microsoft Accessibility to ensure games are within reach of all players, an important cause for me as a disabled player and industry worker. Back in the days of being a GM on those games, you wore many hats, one of which was interaction with the community. It was my start, and here I am, still pursuing community work in 2023! I love world building and socializing on a professional basis with your players. I'd much prefer delivering a great experience to them, and to do everything I can to further enrich the fun had by customers playing your game(s). Happy players are ongoing, returning customers. That foundation makes having an Community Manager to guarantee retention so critical! While you focus on your studio's economic and product development, I have a passion for acting as a voice for you, to them. I want the players to know you're thinking of them, and to take the responses to you as valuable feedback. This assumes, of course, that you aren't doing so directly. Some of the things I also do: events organized within the limits of your game, from town hall style gatherings to special events. Discord moderation and posting updates, maintaining a relationship with players on your studio's forums and other social media (any you want to be utilized). Most importantly, they'll know that they have my ear when they need to express a complaint or concern to an actual person. Do you feel that I might provide something your studio needs? I honestly don't know what else I can say about this that hasn't been said already. But I'm getting sick of saying nothing. Between the layoffs at Phoenix Labs, Avalanche, Behaviour and now Timbre, it's been an absolutely MISERABLE few days for the games industry. And this isn't even counting all the other back-to-back horror stories the year has flung our way, inside or outside the gamedev space. Every day, I see more people getting their whole livelihoods upended without warning - some of them without severance, or multiple times in a single year, or after relocating internationally - despite giving everything they had to careers they loved. I've been in that situation before, and I know how gut-wrenching it can be. But I still struggle to imagine what all these layoff survivors must be going through right now. Especially when *survivors* is the operative word lately. To any job-hunting or #OpenToWork devs out there: feel free to connect. I promise to signal-boost both you and industry job listings whenever I happen boot up LinkedIn. I know it's not much, but hopefully it makes a difference for some of you I also recommend you look up people like Amir Satvat, Kelly Bender, Caitlin Cooke and countless others who are making some herculean efforts to get people back on their feet in what feels like an impossible time. Everyone else reading this, I encourage you to do the same. If not out of pure solidarity, then because I can guarantee you'll want a network of people who are inclined to return the favor if ever you land yourselves in similar situations. Though I personally hope none of you ever will. Hang in there, game-makers. We're all in this together.

Well it's the end of another week and it was tainted by yet more layoffs. Nobody could be blamed for feeling disappointed or nervous about what's ahead. But there are still good things happening. Our community remains as supportive as ever, we're seeing an uptick in opportunities and each day brings someone closer to a new role. Let's make success inevitable. If you know someone affected by the recent layoffs, please reach out, offer to connect them with your network, refer them for jobs you're connected too or if you're part of a community of individuals in something like Discord, it could be a useful source of support and info for them.
