Jim Roberts’ Post

This is WHY you have a hard time believing the evolution of #WilmingtonNC from a fishing village service economy into the #1 startup ecosystem in the WORLD (for small cities under 300,000 people.) I proudly announced this ranking at a NC IDEA event yesterday in Durham or when Business North Carolina announced this in their newsletter this month. 99% of you have never seen this Live Oak Bank HQ building campus in Wilmington North Carolina. There are many more buildings on campus not included in this picture. Wilmington NC is now the #2 ranked startup ecosystem in North Carolina in both ranking systems. Yes Wilmington passed the Queen City from the Great state of Mecklenburg. (Inside joke in North Carolina.) Think about that as Wilmington was ranked as low as 24th in our own state in 2012 in some innovation factors In the NC Innovation Index report. Innovation factors like patents, venture capital, SBIR grants. Or the impact of Live Oak Bank on the coastal economy. Live Oak Bank spun out NCino which had an IPO on Wall Street Live Oak has a joint venture called Apiture, raised $80 m plus in venture capital Live Oak created Canapi Ventures, now the largest tech / FinTech venture fund in the South. This has reduced the brain drain of UNCW graduates leaving the coast and the reduction of the "Beach discount" of accepting bad salaries just because people wanted the coastal lifestyle. We also have the highest monthly attendance at our startup events In the state of North Carolina. (Network for Entrepreneurs in Wilmington NC ) We have put a ton of focus on - helping our Entrepreneurs apply for #SBIR grants - helping our #Entrepreneurs give better investor presentations - advocacy for our #startups on the three most important statewide committees on startups / entrepreneurship in #NorthCarolina - hosting more than 125 #investors to speak at our events. - connecting our Entrepreneurs to the resources and investors in the bigger ecosystem in the state capital in Raleigh - telling our entrepreneurial stories in regional and national media - connecting our first time founders to the increasing number of retired business executives at the coast - informing our #Entrepreneurs of opportunities at events OUTSIDE of the region where they can meet investors and prospects - ENCOURAGING Entrepreneurs who have innovation based on Intellectual property not by saying it can't be done here - eliminating the exclusive good old boy network thinking of the "Kiss the Ring" mentality And all of this happened within a decade. Not 20 years. And I think the improved economic data from Wilmington NC is helping the state of North Carolina move up the national rankings, but we don't get much credit.
