What is written on a Veteran's resume are the skills that he or she feels are most pertinent to the position for which he or she is applying. However, as an employer, when looking at a Veteran's resume, what is not written? What you will not see are the character skills instilled in each of us - leadership, integrity, grit, determination, perseverance, interpersonal skills, technical proficiency, dependability, loyalty, and the list goes on. These skills are not written, rather, they are manifest in each Veteran you employ.

I don't like the term "veteran ready" as it applies to companies I think it de-values our community Saying that we all, as a community, need more than other employees to be successful in the role we were hired to do is almost an insult 1 - Remember that "veteran" applies to an incredibly diverse group of people It isn't all transitioning service members I know thousands of veterans that have been in industry for years, are high performers, and don't #need the company to do more for them than other employees to integrate or stay in their job AND I KICK A$$ IN WHATEVER I CHOOSE TO DO (and will always be a high-performer just like so many other veterans) 2 - I'll add that it is ridiculous to expect the 94% of the population that never served to understand our community I spent 24 years in the Army with 3x joint assignments and still don't understand the Navy 😅 So spending tens of thousands of $$$ providing some training to non-veterans isn't really going to move the needle any into getting them to suddenly become knowledgeable on military culture & experience #quinnsights I believe the term "veteran ready" was coined by people wanting to make a buck selling services and training to companies (many are well-intentioned, but I question impact) And will say to treat us like any other diversity group Track data on hiring and retention Institute hiring programs to reach our community and... 1 - If you aren't hiring enough veterans Look at your candidate pool + hiring process and consider whether bringing in a company like HireMilitary to staff or help market opportunities in the community would be beneficial 2 - If your retention is lower than other diversity groups Look at your Veteran Employee Resource Group and consider whether they are engaged enough or providing sponsorship But I never want a company to strive to be "veteran ready" I want... The veteran to be employment ready AND WE ARE

As a Navy Veteran, I get transitioning military veterans cold messaging me quite frequently... Which is great! But... I cringe when I hear this: "Hey Pat, I just applied for a role with company X, any insights? Are you open to submitting a referral?" 😖 *Do not apply before getting a referral!* I didn't know this until I was out of the uniform for a few years, but it's an important lesson for any veteran: For most referral programs, we cannot refer you if you've already applied on your own! You're already networking and working with the veteran network - which is great. But always, always, always attempt to get a referral *before* you apply. Having a referral definitely gives you a leg up, and if you're going to go through the effort of applying, and you're already networking, try to get a referral first!

Mil-to-Fed Success Story | DoD #SkillBridge Champion | Military Transition Wizard 🧙| #Veteratirockstar | #VFEC Facilitator | Let's Get #OneMoreVeteranHired & #OneMoreVacancyFilled
I'm happy to introduce Baudelio Arias - PMP®, the Federal Executive Boards: Western Region's first DoD-SkillBridge Program Participant! He will be working with our Seattle Federal Executive Board (SFEB), while he is finishing up his 20+ year career in the US Army. Welcome! Are you interested in #SkillBridge Opportunities? 🔸Transitioning Service Members: In case you hadn't heard, many federal agencies also participate in the SkillBridge/ #CSP Program! Agencies like the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (#CISA), the U.S. Department of Commerce, as well as every agency under the U.S. Department of Labor, are approved providers! If you're interested in a particular agency, reach out to them and see if they have a program; Veteran Employment Program Offices (VEPO) Directory - https://lnkd.in/gJNwsjJQ. If you're interested in learning more about our program and opportunities in the Western USA, check out https://lnkd.in/gtpaVhUi 🔸Federal Partners: If you don't have a SkillBridge Program within your agency, let me know and I can help set yours up. The SkillBridge is a DoD program that allows transitioning Service Members the ability to intern with a federal agency (or civilian company) up to the last 180 days of their active-duty time. The program offer you the ability to “test drive” the participants, at no charge to your agency, and allows them to gain much needed experience and training. The pro side of this program is that almost all of the participants are eligible for several special hiring authorities to include the VRA, 30% or More Disabled Veteran (once they separate), and Individuals with Disabilities (Schedule A). This means your agency can train and “test drive” potential job applicants, and then if you have an vacancy you could hire them into, you can. Check out the DoD-SkillBridge site, https://lnkd.in/g-7XTYGP for more information, or reach out to FEBWest@opm.gov to see how our program is doing.

Veterans bring so many technical and soft skills to organisations and not just Defence Industry employers like #baesystems. Veterans can impart leadership, teamwork, initiative, training and planning skills to your business. Does your team need these skills, knowledge, attitudes and behaviours?
We're celebrating the launch of the South Australian Veteran Employer Network, a ground-breaking initiative dedicated to boosting veteran employment in collaboration with local businesses. Two of our veteran employees met with South Australian Minister for Veteran Affairs, Geoff Brock at our Osborne shipyard to discuss the value veterans bring to the workplace and to congratulate Veterans SA on such a great initiative. The network is an alliance between Veterans SA and South Australian businesses from various sectors. Together, we're committed to recognising and harnessing the unique skills and experiences veterans and their partners bring to the table. 📢 Join the Movement! Veterans SA invites enquiries from organisations committed to making a positive impact on veteran employment. Let's work together to create a brighter future for our veterans.
