The UK government would be far better equipped to tackle the challenges it faces if the past 30 years of “digital transformation” strategies had fulfilled their promise. Digital technologies and practices can improve policymaking, streamline administration, and provide insights that help governments learn, react, and adapt more effectively. That’s why a mission to deliver a smarter, more effective public sector, better adapted for the 21st century, deserves to be a top priority for the next UK government. https://lnkd.in/eSh5-VaM #Government #Politics #PolicyMaking #DigitalGovernment #DigitalTransformation #Digital #Technology #Data #PublicSector #Modernisation

Very true. But at the very least, we can expect a fancy new title / label eg. The quantified citizen.

Be good if they had had strategies for anything over 15 to 30 years. Appalling governance.

Absolutely Jerry. Digital literacy amongst policy teams is an essential ingredient of this. I would urge all concerned not to bet the farm on the next bright shiny thing but rather to make what we already have work way better. For instance, why do we have so many swivel chair interfaces in the NHS patching costly ancient systems supported by groaning help desks. Such systems sometimes number up to 7 for patient handling. They support arcane practices, such as doctors writing letters choc full of complex technical language, which have to be typed, spell-checked by the doctor, approved and sent by email. Instead, the doctor could fill in a form linked to an expert system, check it themselves and send it directly to the patient’s GP instantly. Better cheaper faster.

Interesting post Jerry; I’d add that we should take the time to fully define/ prioritise the problems/ opportunities before chasing the latest business/ tech fads…I think civil servants need a thorough dipping in systems and lean thinking before a penny is spent on external resources…

I wholeheartedly agree, but with the average term of a cabinet minister since 2019 being 8 months, strategic thinking and long term planning probably run to the colour of the office decor...........
