This weekend, Germany’s far-right ‘Alternative für Deutschland’ (Alternative for Germany—AfD) party hosted their party conference in Essen, a city just half an hour from where I grew up that I still visit quite frequently. The conference coincided with Germany’s 2:0 win (thank you, VAR! 😉) against Denmark at the Euro’s round of 16—and my impression of pictures from inside the conference building and across the rest of the country could not have been more different.   Inside the building: A predominantly white, predominantly male, predominantly old, and predominantly angry group of people seemed to want to go back to a Germany that they think once was. I felt that many delegates claim to love this country, but seem to despise more than half its population.   Across the rest of the country: People from all backgrounds, ages, and points of view, predominantly happy, dressed up in national colors (and some pink) to publicly celebrate the Germany that is and the team representing it—despite all problems of both.   I watched the game at home with my kids, whom we had gotten jerseys for the occasion—and look at which players they picked. For them, classmates at school and Kita with names like Ilkay and Jamal are not ‘children with migration background’. They are their friends.   I know which of the two Germanys I want them to grow up in…   Views expressed are my own.   #noafd #niewiederistjetzt #aufgehtsdeutschland

As much as I would have hoped for the other side to win, I’ll let you have this one. Not least for the brilliant comments (and the fact that we owed you one)…😉 That way I’ll also not have to reflect on whether technology has improved the sport

A great example of leadership and 2 perspectives of the same story. As someone that visits Hamburg often, and have seen the diversity in this city and many others in the country... I can only echo what you shared.
