"The most commonly reported uses of generative AI are for getting information (53%) and brainstorming (51%). Among those who used generative AI, Black and Latinx young people are significantly more likely to use it for most activities." My most common AI use cases are copy editing and getting information/learning.

Excited share more new research today. Through a collaboration with Hopelab, the Center for Digital Thriving and Common Sense Media, we're sharing data on how young people 14-22 use and think about generative AI. The short answer is that most know about it, about half use, but few have integrated it into their daily lives. Most use it for brainstorming and getting information. Black and Latinx young people use it for a greater variety of purposes than White youth. And in some fascinating open-ended questions, teens 13-17 tell us about how they are excited for the creative and labor-saving possibilities of generative ai, but are also worried about job loss, theft of ideas and information, and more existentially - AI "taking over." I've heard a lot of conversations *about* "young people" and AI -- how they are using it to cheat, how they'll figure it out better and quicker than any adults, how education needs to change to make sure they can get jobs one day, how they can create new things with AI. I really enjoyed reading this report that summarized and analyzing findings *from* "young people" about AI. Last month, Common Sense Media published a report on "Teen and Young Adult Perspectives on Generative AI: Patterns of Use, Excitements, and Concerns." The study surveyed more than 1,000 diverse (along race, gender, sexuality, etc., lines) 14-22 year olds in fall 2023. Some interesting (to me) findings: --Only 4% report being daily users of generative AI --Most common uses of generative AI are for brainstorming and getting information --Among those who have never used generative AI, about 1/3 think it would never be helpful to them. (The racial breakdown of reasons to not use AI was fascinating, and somewhat unexpected, to me!) --Those who expect mostly positive personal impacts from the future of generative AI describe how broader access to information will help with school, work, and their wider community; enhance creativity; and foster opportunities for human advancement. --Those who expect negative personal impacts highlight concerns about the future of generative AI related to the loss of jobs, AI taking over the world, intellectual property theft, misinformation/disinformation, and privacy. (The demographic breakdown of responses here was also interesting) Link to report: https://lnkd.in/eEgFVz8E #AI #AITrends #Education

Exciting Times with Generative AI! Just read a fascinating report by Common Sense Media on how teens and young adults are diving into the world of generative AI. Here are some fun nuggets: - Half the Youth are AI Explorers: About 51% of young folks have dabbled with generative AI. They’re using it to brainstorm, get info, and even tackle schoolwork. Imagine asking an AI to help with your math homework and it actually makes sense! - Future Prospects and Jitters: While many are excited about AI making our lives easier and sparking creativity, there's a fair bit of concern too. Think less "Terminator" and more "Will this AI take my job?" Privacy and misinformation are biggies on their worry list. The mix of excitement and apprehension is real, and it’s shaping up to be quite a rollercoaster. Thank you Ben Kornell. Article linked below. In what I have to assume is a birthday gift from Common Sense Media to me, we've now got some good insights into the perspective and use of AI from the ones that matter the most: students. My takeaways: They're seeing, feeling, and doing the same things that the adults in their lives are about GenAI. 1) Recognizing that broader access to GenAI is needed to actually leverage the potential it has 2) Approach using it like other tech tools. The frequency, reasoning and goals of GenAI use matter. 3) Hesitancy of use is grounded in awareness. As educators, we haven't done enough yet to address concerns and/or model diverse uses. AI and digital literacy are critical right now. Find the report here: https://lnkd.in/e5B_nDub

CEO of AIandYou | AI literacy for marginalized communities, policymakers, NAIAC, NIST AI Safety, AI keynote speaker.
Generative AI - AIandYou is partnering with LeanIn.org to educate women around the globe about AI for the reasons noted in this piece. Marginalized communities, including women, are not embracing new AI tools primarily due to a lack of awareness and will be left behind again. AI literacy can prevent repeating history. "But perhaps the bigger news from an analysis of the top 50 AI tools on the web is that while 69.5% of users were men, only 30.5% were women. If generative AI tools are significant aides in accomplishing work and unlocking new opportunity, that’s a problem going forward." Four in five (79%) online teenagers aged 13-17 now use generative AI tools and services. Recent insights from Ofcom reveal a stark generational divide in the adoption of generative AI technologies. While generative AI has seen exponential growth across sectors, its usage significantly varies by age group. Younger generations, especially those aged 13 to 17, are embracing these tools at a remarkable rate – a stark contrast to the relatively modest adoption among older internet users. This trend raises some pivotal questions: How does this generational gap impact our approach to technology integration and digital literacy? What does it mean for businesses and educators in terms of tailoring their strategies to different age groups? As we navigate this evolving landscape, it’s crucial to understand these dynamics to ensure inclusive and effective adoption of AI technologies. Thijs van Dijk, Leonard Ariens, Daniel Kok, Konstantin Brehm, Merlijn Torensma, Patrick van Aalst, Patrick Bemelmans, How do you think this generational shift in AI tool usage will shape the future of communication and technology education?
