"Every time I asked you about something you achieved, you always started with 'my team', which isn't a bad thing in itself, but can you tell me about your contributions to those achievements? What role did you play? Was there something you did that if you hadn't, the achievements wouldn't have been possible?" ☝🏾This person I was talking to during an interview just stared at me, trying to come up with something to say. And do you know why that was? It was because she couldn't QUANTIFY her contributions. She couldn't actually measure what she did. If you can't quantify your contributions, it means you don't understand what your role is set up to do. What do you do to help your team win? An easier way to put the question is, "What do you do on your team?" One of the characteristics of a team is specialization, meaning, everyone has a specific role, does a specific thing, makes a specific contribution to the team. If everyone on a team did everything, you would have "de-characterized" a team. If we remove what you do on your team, would the team continue without any problems? If so, you are not relevant to that team. Your contributions must be significant and quantifiable. You and the team must be able to quantify the value you bring. It's a brand new week. Make this week count! It’s Friyeay, good people of the internet! And you know what that means: WINners' successes! Today, I have two stories with you that were shared last night on our Grads call. I hope you will find them as inspirational as I do! First one was from a WIN Grad who shared her joy in the 6-month secondment she had secured within her company in a different country. She absolutely loves her new team, she loves the work, she is doing much more interesting work - and a 32% pay rise to boot! What I celebrated with her and the other WINners, was not just these - objectively speaking awesome - results. What I just LOVE about this, is that she has conceived of this idea completely herself and then took the WIN steps to make it happen. What do we learn from this? You have agency. You can shape your life and your career. Don’t wait for others to do this for you. Go you, WINner! And another story that was shared last night - amongst many others! - came from a lady who has taken my rule that you should spend approx. 10% of your work time on sharing what you are capable of and what you have done with your colleagues, so that they can leverage that, to new heights. She calculated she has probably spent about 20% of her time increasing her visibility in her company, through thought leadership pieces, speaking and attending events etc. Yeay her! And yeay company. Because, team, le me tell you what one of the outcomes of all that work was - that the mother of all EVPs realised that she is perfect to do a very high profile redesign of the entire team. If that EVP hadn’t known she is capable of doing that, they would have missed out on her magic. So what is our second lesson of today? It is that you need to share what you’re capable of, and that doing that is great for everyone! Love, love, love when WINners realise their agency, realise they need to take control of their careers, do it and then enjoy the sweet, sweet results of those strategies!
