Women Leaders in Healthcare: You can 𝘢𝘣𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 get promoted in 2024 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 working harder. I know many women in healthcare are overachievers. You probably come to work early, stay late, and constantly raise your hand and ask for more. But that hasn’t translated to the promotion or recognition you want, right? Here’s why: 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥. And that’s a good thing. You may actually be 𝘢𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘥 of getting promoted because you think it equals = more hours at the office and more work dumped on your plate, right? But you can get promoted 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 more work and more degrees. You can even get promoted doing 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 work than you are now. You just need to take a different approach. An approach that leads to the title you want, more free time, more mental clarity, more $$$$, more influence, and a way stronger voice at the table. I know this is possible because I’ve coached women in healthcare and other corporate badasses to do it over and over and over again. It works. Honored is an understatement. Thank you to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) – for inviting me to share a brief glimpse into the actions Kearney is taking to Redesign Healthcare with Women in Mind. I loved hearing how despite our wide-ranging backgrounds across public and private sectors – the call to action of designing solutions to meet the needs of half the population was clear and powerful. A few quick themes that stuck out to me (out of an abundance of ideas and passions) – - Representation is the start. If we want to empower women, they need to be in positions of power. If we want to design products and offerings that meet the needs of the customer, then the customer needs to have a voice at the table. If we want to build leading technology solutions, then women need to be included in patents (World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO) and skill development programs (LinkedIn). - Inspiring examples of creating impact across global communities – too many to name them all, but I loved hearing about the ideas put into action – from Organon and the focus of going beyond the medicine to developing comprehensive health solutions to Wipro's emphasis on enabling localized, relevant data collection through technology and then partnering to help community leaders to provide more informed maternal health education to Bayer's goal of creating access to contraception for 100M women across the globe - “Build in equity, don't bolt it on” - Elizabeth and Champions of Change Coalition this theme will stick with me - congratulations on the launch of the 7 Principles, can't wait to learn more. As a Midwesterner at heart – so many of the themes made me think of a tried and true saying from the Field of Dreams (a local classic) – if you build it they will come. But today, I thought about this saying a bit more deeply, if you don’t build it with intention – who it is meant to serve, what does the customer / patient / user need from it – then they won't come because it won't be relevant and it won’t enable equity, but hinder it. As was so simply stated in the closing remarks – to revolutionize healthcare, we must embed gender equity at the core. Thanks to all for a powerful discussion! Did you know? Women constitute the backbone of the healthcare workforce, yet gender disparities persist, and despite being 80% of this sector, women face challenges accessing leadership roles and entrepreneurial opportunities (World Health Organization). I found myself amidst the tangled web of healthcare, managing programs while navigating a landscape rife with toxicity. But within that turmoil, a spark ignited ➡ a vision to carve out something new, one that echoed with empowerment and transformation. I, too, felt the weight, the strain of toxic environments, the stifling limitations, and the desperation (yes desperate) for change. I was tired of feeling like I was begging for scraps and not being valued, no matter how much I worked. The system I once devoted myself to felt suffocating, prompting me to envision an alternative. I wanted to find something where I could be a rock-solid support for fellow women, making sure they feel empowered and valued in their journey. Data demonstrates: Women-owned businesses in healthcare showcase diverse solutions, infusing creativity and innovation within the industry. Female entrepreneurs in healthcare surged, accounting for 23% of new ventures between 2014 and 2019 (U.S. Census Bureau). Yet, barriers persist, hindering women's access to funding and resources in this sector. This was a great read, highlighting the practice of women supporting women. It included this concerning statistic: According to a McKinsey report, women account for 75 percent of entry-level healthcare roles, 70 percent of manager roles and 61 percent of senior manager or director roles. But the numbers change dramatically as promotion and retention rates and external hiring fail to keep pace to increase representation at the top. Just 45 percent of healthcare vice presidents are women and only 32 percent of women make it to the healthcare C-suite. There is a lot of room to improve here and to continue to have women support women as they travel their path to the C-suite.

Only 45 percent of health care vice presidents are women and only 32 percent of #women make it to the health care C-suite, according to McKinsey & Company. Yesterday, Forbes released their list of the World's Most Powerful Women. While the top ten are mostly politicians (and, somewhat randomly, Taylor Swift), there are a number of executives in the top 100 who are building a more equitable healthcare landscape. According to World Health Organization, 25% of leadership positions in healthcare belong to women, despite women only representing 10% of C-Suite positions across the Fortune500. While this seems small, it is indicative of a promising trend: female leaders are playing an increasingly pivotal role in improving outcomes for women's health (and ensuring greater healthcare access for all). Who are these women? Karen S. Lynch (No. 6) is the CEO at CVS Health. CVS is the largest company in the world helmed by a female CEO. She has overseen numerous acquisitions (Oak Street Health and Signify Health), and is bringing down prescription drug costs through transparency around drug pricing. Sarah London (No. 22) is the CEO at Centene Corporation. She is the youngest woman to lead a Fortune 500 company. Centene is the largest Medicaid insurer, helping millions of poor Americans access healthcare. Judy Faulkner (No. 55) is the CEO and Founder at Epic. Epic's software optimizes digital healthcare to build a more unified patient experience. Close to 50% of the US healthcare market uses Epic. As Nicolette Jones said, 'At a time when frontline workers are retiring at an alarming rate, reproductive rights are under attack, and US life expectancy is declining, female leadership in the healthcare sector has never been more needed.'
