Transitioning from military service to the civilian workforce is a nuanced process, and being a veteran isn't an automatic job guarantee. Drawing from my experience as a Talent Acquisition professional and conversations with transitioning service members since retiring from the US Navy in 2009, I resonate with Johnny's observations, and I wholeheartedly agree that veterans must transcend the "veteran" label on their resumes. Key Takeaways: 1. Beyond the Uniform: Veterans should emphasize individual attributes and accomplishments rather than relying solely on military background. 2. Initiative Matters: Highlighting initiative is crucial. Veterans must demonstrate how their military experiences translate into tangible value in civilian roles. 3. Pitfall of Entitlement: Focusing on being a veteran, rather than showcasing experiences, can hinder job prospects. Veterans need to articulate success stories, not assume entitlement. https://lnkd.in/e7KNqPns

A recent LinkedIn report found that 33% of veterans are underemployed, and they are 15.6% more likely to be underemployed than nonveterans. But why? Sometimes, it's because recruiters or hiring managers don't know how to translate a veterans' military experience to the private sector. More times than not, veterans are placed in manual labor jobs, or another position that ends up being a bad job fit. When job-searching the internet, most people search by using generic job titles. But what if you're a Gunnery Sergeant? Employers face multiple challenges when it comes to filling jobs and retaining workers. To broaden talent pools, companies can open their hiring practices to consider military veterans for a variety of roles. Veterans represent a source of labor potential that is untapped relative to the breadth of experience and depth of skills they acquire and develop during their service. While not every military role is directly transferrable to a civilian job, most skills are. Our latest article explores the complex veteran employment landscape and discusses how the military and the private sector can close the veteran opportunity gap.
