"Digital skills": What are they? And do CPOs really care? A great discussion this week with Andrew Daley, specialist recruiter and Partner of Edbury Daley. Some may consider "digital skills" as being proficient in MS Office and SAP MM module. That's not going to be relevant though for the future. Digital skills means understanding procurement technology, no code apps, Gen AI, process automation, data science and much, much more. You need experts in your team who know their stuff in these areas. And you need them urgently, if you wish to stay relevant. There will be a boom for contractors and subject matter experts in these areas. The days of "bums on seats" and staffing procurement departments 100% with permanent employees will soon be over. There is a bright future for those who understand tech, and how to apply it within procurement. But don't expect these experts to find an average salary and mandatory on-site presence attractive. There will be more demand than supply. We're entering a brave new world for how we staff procurement departments, for those able to think outside the box. The tech industry has done it for years this way. Where they lead, others follow. Buckle up, it's going to be an interesting ride. ************************************* 🚀 Hi, I'm James. I'd include business process management as part of digital skills. You need to have a deep understanding of business processes if you're going to apply technology to optimize them.
Interesting perspective, James! How do you see the role of digital skills evolving for CPOs amidst the tech-driven procurement landscape? Your insights could spark some exciting discussions! 🌟
Thanks again James for inviting me to take part in what was a very enjoyable discussion. I hear so many positive words about the importance of talent from leaders at events, but so much of it isn't backed up when they get back to the office and lost in the day-to-day. Things are going to change as you say, and those that adapt the best can thrive.
This is gonna be a massive change for those not already preparing. Next-gen pros grew up with tech, it’s who they are. We get more accomplished on a phone then a days worth of work clicking buttons on a keyboard. And with the infusion of AI, it’ll change even faster. Great call out here, James
digital and data literacy / skills are tremendously important to navigate changes within Procurement and helping yourself to optimise yours and your teams work.
Love your perspective...both verbal and visual J.M.
