Just left a great session at the Society of Entrepreneurs Round Table where Josh Poag shared insights on the POAG brand's journey - past, present, and future. It's a story underscored by resilience. As the driving force behind Memphis' prominent lifestyle center, SaddleCreek, POAG has weathered significant financial storms, including the 2008 recession, the 2016 retail downturn, and the challenges posed by Covid-19, emerging even stronger. During the period from 2001 to 2016, POAG strategically acquired lifestyle centers and spearheaded developments across the Mid-South, such as Tanger Outlet, Highland Row, and even the new and improved Graceland. Despite facing hurdles with national brands amidst the retail downturn, the company adeptly shifted its focus towards local retailers and restaurants, with Char anchoring the Highland Row development and becoming a community staple. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when conventional wisdom suggested that retail was facing its demise, POAG forged a partnership with JLL, the third-largest retail property management firm in the US. This collaboration not only enabled the company to sustain successful retail and lifestyle spaces but also facilitated the expansion of development initiatives and acquisition of robust assets nationwide. On February 20th our beautiful retail location was struck by an impaired driver in the early hours of the night. Thankfully the store was closed at the time, and no one was hurt. There was considerable structural damage done to the building, forcing us to close our doors for the foreseeable future. As you can imagine, a small business owner that relies heavily on in store traffic, our worry and stress crept in quite quickly. 💡 What happens now? 💡 How long until we can reopen? 💡 How will this impact our growth?   We are a tasting room after all! We pride ourselves on offering the highest level of customer service out there. Hosting community events, tasting sessions, sharing our passion and love for quality ingredients and well being are things that our brand has been built on.   It didn't take long for our thought process to shift into, "Okay, how can we take this event that's totally out of our control, and turn it into an opportunity to breathe life into other aspects of our business?"   I live by the mentality that while we cannot always control a situation, we can always control how we react. We don't have to be grateful that our store was damaged, but we can be grateful for the opportunities that now lie ahead. There is so much innovation which comes out of Ireland. Exciting retail, with a touch of youthful adventure, located over a number of levels, in their Dublin store, Om Diva, is a great example of introducing that international flavour of fashion and accessories to a willing and most accepting consumer. Quite bohemian in theme, with a touch of sparkle, this is a great example of "right concept, right market". So smart and refreshing.
