𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 ? That’s one of the great questions I discussed with Ivy Partners SA during an event on the 𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩. Part of the answer can be found just by looking at kids... 🧠 In an experiment, Carol Dweck and Claudia Mueller compared praising kids for their intelligence ("𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭, 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝...") instead of praising them for their efforts ("𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝"). 💡 Results?! 1- Praising for intelligence destroys kids' motivation and it actually 𝐃𝐄𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄𝐃 their performance. 2- Praising kids for their efforts 𝐈𝐍𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄𝐃 their performance. 3- Even worse! Kids receiving intelligence praises tend to choose 𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐬 ! They don’t choose the challenging, difficult task where they can grow and learn from failures... No, no, no!! Why? Because the adult is NOT praising the effort or the growth mindset. 𝐀𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬, so kids tend to choose easy tasks in order to keep receiving praises for their "intelligence". Just like a drug addict seeking the next dopamine shot associated with the praise. 👩🏫 The same goes for us adults at the workplace. One of the most important leadership skill is knowing how to sustain 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 in teams. Rather than focusing on external rewards, leaders can 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲, 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞. Frame why the work matters, give relative autonomy over how it's done, and provide feedback on progress rather than only obsessing over outcomes. This supports feelings of competence that fuel motivation from within. 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐰𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐨 !!! Sustainable motivation is driven less by what's "in it" and more by 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭. The most enlightened leaders understand this neurological reality and learn the art of nourishing the self-determination and growth that light up the brain's own natural reward pathways. ❤️Growing into a great leader is sometimes about simply remembering what or who really inspired you as a child...and striving to shine a similar light on others as an adult! Feel free to contact me if you'd like to discuss hosting a tailored event at your organization on topics related to neuroscience, leadership, performance…  Thanks again to IVY Partners for the warm welcome 🙏
