When I started my small business MISGIF Photo Booths back in 2017 a large part of my mission was to eliminate the need for printed photos since my firsthand experience as an event planner informed me that this was not only a wasteful practice, but also extremely ineffective for brands wanting to increase their online marketing reach — and most importantly harmful to our local environment, wildlife and community.
Fast forward to around 2019 when I finally put my foot down and not only stopped advertising and offering printed photos, but actively started educating my clients on the benefits of all-digital photo booths (which by the way, was not easy to do since 99.9% of businesses in my industry promote print photo booths and it was pretty ingrained in event planners’ heads at the time that prints were a must for an awesome event experience) …
It’s been 5 years now since I made that brave decision for my small business (I say brave because when you stop offering something everyone is asking for it can be a bit — ok very— scary financially.) And honestly, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.
Printing simply isn’t ideal if you’re looking to embrace sustainable event solutions, and the data which I’ve researched extensively backs this up. It’s also absolutely not necessary for a fun and memorable photo booth experience…I would know since my team has executed over 500 fun and memorable all-digital photo booth experiences without prints over the last 5 years.
All of that said, I don’t talk enough on LinkedIn about the importance of prioritizing sustainability at events, which is a shame because the event industry is still (despite all of our best efforts) pretty unsustainable.
But what I can say, is over the last 15+ years of working in the events industry I’ve been thrilled to see more and more companies and event planners embracing sustainable event solutions.
From sourcing event vendors who are intentional about reducing or offsetting their own carbon footprint (worth mentioning also is that a portion of MISGIF Photo Booths profits from every event is donated to environmental nonprofits in Arizona like Trees Matter and Keep Tempe Beautiful) …to being mindful of their plastic-waste and recycling options …to partnering with incredible nonprofits like Waste Not and companies like M Culinary Concepts to ensure food doesn’t go to waste…a lot of progress has been made over the last decade. It gives me hope, even if we still have a long way to go.
For those curious, sharing an article about the benefits of skipping print photo booths at events…it’s a pretty niché and fascinating read if you’re into event sustainability! Enjoy 💚
