Welding equipment is an integral part of almost all industries. Power semiconductor devices are an integral part of all welding machines. The Proton-Electrotex company produces power semiconductors for welding machines and robots. Operation of diodes in welding machines is characterized by short-term cycles of current pulses leading to the heating of the semiconductor structure followed by its cooling. As a result, the devices are subjected to repeating cyclic thermomechanical stress. This dictates stringent requirements to the static and dynamic properties of devices. Automotive manufacturers wouldn’t make many vehicles without using welding processes to join metal parts together. Whether it’s open-arc welding, resistance welding or some other variation on the theme, there’s one common element – the rapid discharge of energy (typically electrical energy) to become heat energy, fusing together two or more components in an assembly. For sensors, that’s bad news! Widely used to position, detect and identify parts, most sensors don’t tolerate the strong energy fields that occur during welding processes, or the physical by-products that are produced as a result. Two interesting rotating electrical machines which are rare to be found in the industry are the 💡 Flux-reversal and the 💡 Flux-switching PM machines. This illustartion (source: Reluctance electric machines : design and control - Ion Boldea and Lucian Tutelea) shows how the two machines can be derived from a flux modulated machine. These machines, as the previously discussed Vernier machine, have a inbuilt magnetic gear effect. The two machines are basically the same machine, they work on the same principle with a different magnet placement. The flux switching can tipically better concentrate the flux but is highly subject to demagnetization. Typically the Vernier machine is superior in terms of torque density to these two. Still, these machines can be an interesting solution for some direct drive applications, in particular where magnets cannot be placed on the rotor (and reluctance motors are not suitable because of low torque density). #electricalengineering #electromechanical #emotor #magnetics
