Ancient Pueblo culture communicated using conch-shell trumpets, study finds A new study recently published in the journal Antiquity revealed the ancient Pueblo culture’s communication methods, and the significant role conch-shell trumpets played in community cohesion and social organization. The interdisciplinary research team utilized Geographic Information Systems (GIS)-based modeling techniques to investigate the acoustic landscapes of the Chaco region in northwest New Mexico. Conch-shell trumpets, integral to contemporary Pueblo ritual practices, were unearthed in burial contexts at Chaco Canyon. Bronze Age burials and artifacts uncovered at Papowo Biskupie, Poland Excavations at the Papowo Biskupie site in northern Poland have uncovered evidence challenging previous beliefs about the burial rituals of the Chełmno group, a northern community of the Lusatian culture from 1200 to 450 BCE. The Chełmno group, traditionally thought to be unaffected by social and economic changes, had been considered distinct from other Lusatian communities due to a lack of widespread metal hoarding. However, recent excavations at Papowo Biskupie have upended this perception, revealing over 550 bronze artifacts, primarily arm and neck jewelry, associated with the skeletal remains of at least 33 individuals... Archaeologists uncover Roman-era early settler burials in Germany A team of archaeologists, including students and professionals, has uncovered a burial ground near Nauheim, a town southwest of Frankfurt in the central-western German state of Hessen. The region had a known history of a Roman military camp, leading the team to expect Roman remains. However, they were surprised to discover the graves of early settlers who had arrived in the middle of the 1st century CE. In total, the archaeologists unearthed 46 graves at the site, predominantly consisting of 44 cremation burials, with only two inhumations. Additionally, six rectangular ditch systems were discovered, which were likely used to enclose special burials. Notably, the foundation of a tomb, once several meters high, was also found, although it had been dismantled in the Middle Ages, likely for its stone. More than 10,000 pre-Columbian earthworks are still hidden beneath Amazon rainforest A team of researchers has harnessed cutting-edge remote sensing technology, statistical modeling, and historical ecological data to unveil an astonishing revelation: the Amazon rainforest, often viewed as a pristine wilderness, conceals more than 10,000 pre-Columbian earthworks. 9,500-year-old baskets discovered in Spanish bat cave A cave in southern Spain known as the Cave of the Bats has unveiled a treasure trove of ancient artifacts, rewriting the history of prehistoric European societies. Within this cave, dating back nearly 10,000 years, people carefully buried their deceased loved ones with exquisite baskets and sandals. These intricate artifacts, crafted from the local flat-leaved esparto grass, demonstrate an astounding level of skill and artistry. 2,000-year-old knife with Denmark’s oldest runic inscription discovered on Funen Archaeologists recently uncovered an almost 2,000-year-old knife bearing the oldest runic inscription ever found in Denmark. This is such a beautiful combination of hydroacoustic methods and archaeology 🤓. Geophysical methods are so useful in many ways. It reminds me of when I joined Esteban Sesto Casals, and we went to a colonial graveyard in western Venezuela to study graves from the 1800s using resistivity in Aroa's British graveyard. Anyway, in this case, researchers used multibeam, side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profiler, and core data to reconstruct the paleo-landscape. They found an almost 1 km long stone wall built more than 10k years ago for hunting purposes. The now-submerged 'Blinkerwall' was once near the coastline and was used to 'corner' animals to facilitate their hunting.
