🌟 The Meissner Effect 🌟 Superconductivity is a very interesting and important physical phenomenon. It means that below a certain critical temperature (usually below a few tens of Kelvin, that is, about minus 200 degrees Celsius), a material can transmit electric current without loss, thus exhibiting zero Characteristics of resistors. 👤 Materials in the superconducting state also have an even more wonderful characteristic called complete diamagnetism, also known as the Meissner effect. Specifically, when a material in #superconducting state is placed in an external magnetic field, an equal and opposite magnetic field will be generated inside the superconducting material. This magnetic field and the external magnetic field cancel each other out, so that the inside of the superconducting material always keep the total magnetic field at zero. 👥 This property makes them valuable in many applications. Given the highly capable #thermalimaging abilities of its uncooled microbolometer sensor, the AXIS Q1961-TE fitted IAAPS’ needs perfectly, allowing testing cell operators to view live temperature maps of tests fed to a DVR. A color-mapped thermal picture is the ideal medium for IAAPS to be able to reliably detect if an unseen methanol fire were to occur. ⏩ "Axis hardware has proved to be an effective and efficient way to monitor for invisible fires in our propulsion cell test lab. Efficiency and #TRL of each component of the #powertrain State-of-the-art technologies on research and developments underway in the field of alternative #aerospace propulsion architectures Superconducting machines hold the avenues for reduction in the machine size and weight. The significantly superior conductivity of the material improves the current carrying capability in the winding that makes feasible to produce higher strength air gap field with a small volume of the field winding. Besides, the use of superconducting wires profoundly enables the prospect for superconducting machines. Early adoption of superconductors in the electrical machine was established with advent of the Niobium-Titanium materials (NbTi). NbTi as superconductor was only suitable to replace the dc field winding in the machine. However, the small operating temperature range of these material (4.5 to 5.5 oK), and operational issues relating to the harmonics, required uneconomical cryogenic system and ceased any further development until the early to mid-1980s. In the later part of the century, the introduction of high temperature superconductor (HTS) that meant to be operated between temperatures of 25 to 77 degK, gave an impetus to further expand on the application of the technology. A fully superconducting machine uses superconductors both in stator and rotor and gives the opportunity of reducing the losses both in field and armature windings. Moreover, such a design is impeded with the development of the ac (armature) winding conductor for high current density, low-loss and compactness. Both partially and fully HTS machines can be advanced further with improved performance for high field and high temperature and with gaining technology maturity. Additionally, the improvement of cryogenic technology is an essential part for the development of such technology. The industrial application based superconducting material for the machine use are yttrium barium copper oxide (YBaCuO) compounds and magnesium diboride (MgB2). Bismuth strontium calcium copper oxide (Bi-2223) correspondingly requires operating temperature of liquid N2 (77degK) and liquid hydrogen (30degK), respectively. The machines development on the superconducting technologies exhibits efficiency which is close to unity and specific power in the range of 25-40 kW/kg for the motors and 40-80 kW/kg for the generators. In addition to this, the development is expected for the cryocoolers requiring a Carnot efficiency of 30%, weighing less than 3 kW/kg. A partially HTS Wound Field Synchronous Motor (WFSM) machine design developed under NASA, showed the potential for achieving 98% efficiency and specific power of 16 kW/kg. Despite the promises of the superconducting machines, the low TRL in the flightworthy cryogenic system and the associated design complexity is being accelerated. #SustainableAviation HyFlux #superconducting Aerospace Technology Institute
