Can regenerative agriculture pave the way for win-win outcomes when it comes to carbon emissions from traditional farming? Earlier today, we invited Varaha, a portfolio company of our OCTAVE Well-being Economy Fund (OWEF), to Ecosperity Week 2024 to showcase the promising concept and invite mission-driven collaborators to join our journey to restore nature.    Speaking from the Ecosperity Action Hub, Varaha’s co-founder Madhur Jain shared how the start-up is incentivising small-scale farmers in India to adopt sustainable and regenerative farming practices. By facilitating their participation in the US$2 billion voluntary carbon offset market through regenerative agriculture, Varaha’s efforts are not only lowering the carbon footprint of farming and creating fresh avenues for economic growth, but also improving soil quality – creating a virtuous loop to sustain and uplift farmers’ livelihoods.   And the momentum doesn’t stop there! The grand finale for The Liveability Challenge (TLC) presented by Temasek Foundation is happening tomorrow on 17 April. Our Chief Strategy Officer and Investment Committee Member for OWEF, James Ong, MBA, CPA, will be a part of the judging panel to hear pitches from 7 finalists on their innovative solutions to the biggest sustainability challenges facing cities in the tropics.   This year's TLC themes – Climate Change, and Food and Nutrition – deeply resonate with TPC’s holistic purpose. Delighted to have been part of the development of this industry-aligned, farmer-informed, impact-led framework for Regenerative Agriculture after a long 3 years of cross-industry collaboration and co-development from its early days being ideated by a small group of us within the Americas Working Group to the forming of a dedicated, financed programme by the forward-thinking Founding Members to now a mainstream, fully-fledged v1 to be tested and further refined by the broader SAI membership and beyond! Providing a common “definition” alongside a flexible “choose your own adventure” approach for growers to drive impact based on their own particular context, the broader programme also plans to: ✅ Support the benchmarking of existing company-specific and voluntary regenerative agriculture schemes ✅ Be integrated with existing SAI tools for crop and animal systems - the FSA, ERBS, and SDP - to allow for an holistic, seamless approach to assessing on-farm and landscape-level sustainability and regeneration ✅ Provide, through an aggregated and evolving data bank of credible impact measurement tools, a platform for monitoring, measuring, verifying and reporting (#MMRV) that will allow growers and supply chains to also VALORISE (#MMRVV) regenerative activity on farm, whether through; production system cost-savings or yield improvements; specific ecosystem service payments; carbon & nature tax avoidance; generation of natural capital assets on a corporate’s balance sheet; brand growth/market share protection though credible, verifiable data and engaging case studies; or through reputational integrity. Anne explains how she managed to acquire her new farm working in partnership with Lenteland. She also mentions other interesting initiatives in the Netherlands such as Herenboeren Nederland and Land van Ons. 🌳 Perennial crops Focusing on perennial crops like fruit and nut trees enhances soil health, reduces input costs, and offers long-term, reliable income. Their deep root systems prevent erosion, improve soil structure, and reduce the need for fertilisers and pesticides. Additionally, perennials support biodiversity and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable farming system. 🦋 Radical Diversity  Anne aims to maximise diversity on her farm by planting as many different fruit and nut tree varieties as possible throughout her agroforestry systems. Lack of shared definition of regenerative agriculture was flagged as one of the main collective challenges hindering its scale up. Well, we don’t have excuses anymore! It may not be perfect, yet SAI “Regenerating Together” global framework is a great start we can all be proud of - as one of the most comprehensive collaboration efforts to align food industry, farmer coops and practitioners to align on a set of outcomes and metrics to measure progress towards more regenerative agriculture. It is a key milestone in our journey to scale up and will without doubts open new doors for concrete collaborations at landscape level! We can’t wait to put this in practice together!

Europe Launches €30 Million Regenerative Agriculture Initiative to Transform Food Systems A coalition led by EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) announced the Regenerative Innovation Portfolio, a €30 million project designed to revolutionize regenerative agriculture across Europe, aiming to integrate various stakeholders including governments, investors, and retailers, is set to receive €15 million from EIT Food and an expected matching from corporate partners. Seeing public-private partnerships in projects like this gives me great optimism about the future of regenerative ag. Shifting the Focus in Agri-Tech: Putting the Small-Scale Farmer at the Wheel I recently had the privilege of delivering the keynote address at the AgriTech4Kenya Consultation Workshop & Launch event by Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT and the CGIAR Accelerate for Impact Platform (A4IP). This gathering brought together a diverse group – public, private, research organizations, entrepreneurs, and more – to tackle a critical question: Bridging the Disconnect Between Research, Investment, and Adoption of Sustainable Agri-Tech Solutions in Kenya. Known as the Silicon Savannah, Kenya is not short of innovations, research, and investments that promise to unlock the promise of agripreneurship. Yet very few of these solutions scale or have succeeded in transforming agriculture food systems. While there are multiple contributing factors, I believe two key issues are at play: 1. Unequal Risk Distribution: The burden of risk in food systems falls heavily on small-scale producers, who are least equipped to handle it. 2. Fragmented System: The current system lacks cohesion, with each player focused on their own objectives. Investors and funders prioritize short-term returns, while innovators are hyper-focused on scaling their own solutions. This leaves small-scale producers understandably hesitant to adopt these solutions - there is no clear path to financial prosperity. We need a shift in perspective. Let’s reimagine our food system as a Formula 1 race. The driver, the small-scale producer, is the Most Valuable Player (MVP). Every player in the system – researchers, innovators, funders – has one objective: empowering the farmer to succeed. Human-centered systems design is the pit crew that equips the MVP with the right tools, training, and support. Taking a human-centered approach ensures solutions are accessible, context-sensitive, and responsive to evolving needs. Human-centered design combined with systems thinking is crucial. We must move beyond isolated solutions and work in tandem to strengthen the entire food system, which is already complex and prone to risk. The system is only as strong as its weakest link.
