I am no IITian. I went to a tier-3 college in India with no Computer Science degree and I barely cleared it. 2 years later went to a top university in US and started working for Microsoft as a Software Engineer. I now work as a remote Senior Software Engineer from India for a US based Company. This is what I did to upskill myself in 2 years: 1. Became a self learner I delved into online courses, tutorials, and resources to grasp new technologies, programming languages, and frameworks. I used free resources including Youtube videos, GitHub repositories, LinkedIn. 2. Built Projects I started building real-world projects to reinforce my learning and gain hands-on experience. I built FullStack projects including clones of social media websites, simple games etc. 3. Made open source contributions The open-source community became my second home. Contributing to open-source projects not only honed my coding skills but also exposed me to the collaborative nature of software development. 4. Networked with professionals on LinkedIn Building a strong professional network is vital in any industry, especially in tech. I actively connected with professionals on LinkedIn, engaging in discussions, and seeking guidance from industry experts 5. Practiced, a lot Upskilling requires dedication and persistence. I practiced relentlessly, tackling challenging problems, participating in coding competitions, and attending hackathons. 6. Built an impressive Resume & strong practical knowledge The strong Resume with good keywords helped me get interviews. The practical knowledge helped me crack them.

Remember when we thought that it was a great idea to teach every child to code? That this would somehow prepare them for the future? With mass layoffs of software developers, and a highly oversaturated labour market, and a lack of great demand for new gadgets, it’s time to address some of these assumptions. Anyone who has worked in the industry will know that it’s not how many developers you have, but how good your best developers are. This is unpopular with outsiders, as it’s considered “elitist”. I’m not sure why. Nobody wants to eat mediocre half warm food, or use a bridge that might fall down. Quality and expertness is “elitist”. Similarly, many children with brilliant technical analytical skills are often demotivated by poorly taught coding classes. Today, they can apply these particular skills to economics, data analytics and even psychology. The Bebras challenge is much smarter way to unlock this talent. In short, we need to consider that the software era is over, encourage the handful of elite developers and architects we will still need, and allow others to enjoy a richer and more demanding technical education. ✍ Andrew Orlowski writes: What do caddy butchers and diecasters have in common? They’re both #occupations, once widespread, that don’t exist anymore. And maybe they’ll soon be joined by another: #coders. Software #developers are not feeling very loved right now as the #tech industry continues to dispense with them en masse. January saw an increase in redundancies, according to the website Layoffs.fyi.  Leading the charge were Alphabet, Meta and eBay, which all announced fresh rounds of job #cuts, while Amazon and Microsoft both slashed their games divisions. They add to the 164,969 tech layoffs publicly announced in 2022, and 262,682 last year. Many more were not disclosed in public.  This may be more than a correction as the #sector rectifies itself after the extravagant overhiring of the Covid #pandemic. But perhaps something else is also going on, and that is that the world just doesn’t need so many #software developers. Elon Musk’s experiment in running X, formerly Twitter, using just a fraction of the #staff it once employed is now being copied, albeit not so radically. Code Review Politics In A Stack Ranking Environment = The work in tech has become so depressing of late that it can honestly be compared with hazardous jobs. This August, twenty-two-year-old Yohanes Kidane, a graduate of Ivy League school Cornell University, started working as a software engineer for Netflix. Less than two weeks later, he went missing. A couple of weeks later, an unresponsive body was found floating in the San Francisco Bay in an area located northeast of the Golden Gate Bridge. It was later confirmed to be Kidane’s. In a statement, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said “The cause of death was determined to be from blunt impact injuries with drowning as a significant contributing condition. The mode of death was determined to be suicide.” = In my experience the chief contributory cause is the following: 1) There is an escalation of compensation (like 370K total comp in the referred article below) 2) So there is corresponding escalation of performance expectations 3) Colleges do not prepare students in brutal corporate politics and survival 4) Companies are not at all interested in team work - community experience in Engineering 5) Current smartphone bound culture also makes people extremely lonely outside of work as well as inside = In the referred article, Eric Yu states this: Meta has a pretty high bar when it comes to code quality, and the code reviews were tough. At other companies I've interned at, the code reviews were very lenient — someone quickly looked at my work and approved it. But at Meta, there's a strong emphasis on writing code the right way, and you have to follow specific design patterns and architecture styles. In these reviews, I collaborated with different teams to identify the best way to write the code. There was some tension at times, and I received tough feedback on how to fix the code after numerous reviews. It sometimes left me feeling bad. In my opinion, there's a constructive way to give feedback: "Hey, I like the attempt you made here, and there might be opportunities to improve in this way." But some engineers at Meta lacked tact and nuance: "This is really bad. You shouldn't have written it like this." This kind of feedback makes it sound like this is a black-and-white issue, and it often overlooks the emotional aspect of communication. = If Meta really wants to implement proper Code Reviews, they can consult Dr. Robert Fink Context-sensitive code reviews lnkd.in/g6DQEEqK Sadly, Meta, Netflix and other large tech companies have no desire to implement a humane workplace. It is Sink or Swim folks and that too in a Roman Gladiator arena where the overlord managers are busy measuring Developer Productivity. 🚨 DO NOT HIRE ON LINKEDIN 🚨 This previous summer my Co-Founder (Max Barker) and I hired a senior Software Engineer on LinkedIn. Initially, we were hopefully of this developer's ability and skillset. Their LinkedIn profile looked strong, and after a few video calls we were ready to go forward and onboard the engineer. Yet, within a few weeks we started to see the Truth unfold. The speed at which this one developer was building seemed a little suspicious. I can recall scheduling code Sprints that should have taken a few weeks, only taking this developer a couple of days. At first this was appreciated, but we soon saw the wolf in sheep's clothing. We discovered the unfortunate truth when our developer was IMPERSONATED by a completely different person. (🚨 yikes) During one of our weekly calls the developer accidentally turned on his camera to reveal that there were at least TWO other developers that had access to our users sensitive and private data. (🚨 see gif) We immediately off-boarded this developer, and his accomplice, unfortunately only after disbursing half our allocated budget on their salary.
