First impressions matter - but not many large corporations seem to care. I get that the headline might be slightly provocative but from a service and hospitality perspective the corporate setup surprises me. Considering the amount of money that is spent on creating, building and protecting a brand I am amazed that most companies rely on an external company to be their first impression. I'm talking about the corporate reception setup. For many visitors, suppliers and potential costumers the receptionist is the very first person they meet that personifies the company. Stepping in to a reception area that is thoughtfully branded and set up to give you the proper feel of the company, the person who embodies the space is working for someone else, and most of the time they are not very well paid. I believe that to be able to deliver service and hospitality you need to have a setup based on pride and ownership, you need to feel important, trusted and valued and you need to be able to improvise and have the mandate to solve problems that occur. Two years ago Volvo Cars insourced their Torslanda receptions, turned them into Lobbys and hired senior service and hospitality professionals and paid them well. The project has revolutionized the culture and employees and visitor frequently express give positive feedback on the concept. The request came from the executive management team and was executed by Lisa Thoren & Hanna Johansson and her team of Lobby Ambassadors. A diverse group of people from hospitality and retail with a genuine passion for people, service and hospitality. I am proud to say that I am one of them. I guess the main takeaway here is: if you care about your brand - care about the people who represent it, give them the mandate to do it well and trust their competence. Here's What I Learned from "Surviving 1-Star Ice Hotel" for Brent Rivera I learned the importance of trusting your team. The most challenging part of the production was being in two places at once. While I was in Canada at the Ice Hotel, the other half of my team was in Death Valley at the World's Hottest Hotel. Producing a video with a remote team requires a high level of trust, which ensures smooth communication, efficiency, and the maintenance of project timelines without constant supervision. Trust empowers team members, fostering a sense of responsibility and ownership over their work, which can lead to enhanced creativity and innovation. Delegating tasks according to each member's strengths promotes a more productive and harmonious work environment. Additionally, it reduces the stress and anxiety associated with micromanagement, benefiting both the project's quality and team morale. In the digital age, where remote work and geographical dispersion are increasingly common, building and maintaining trust is not just beneficial; it's essential for the successful completion of projects and the long-term health of professional relationships. Overall, the post-production process was seamless because of how everything just aligned, which made it a massive success. London - what a magical city it is at Xmas don’t you think? Me and my family just spent a whirlwind weekend there seeing the sights and sounds of this manic place. 1st stop - shopping on Oxford Street. 2nd stop - dinner at JW Marriott Grosvenor House 3rd stop - taxi to the Palladium to see panto (had to get out of taxi and walk due to ridiculous amount of traffic!) and photos of Regent Street lights 4th stop - Panto at the Palladium! Oh yes we did!! Absolutely brilliant Next day 1st stop - Winter Wonderland. If you get there early enough there are no queues for the rides but be prepared to get well and truly ripped off as it’s sooooo expensive 2nd stop - Harrods - very busy. Didn’t buy anything - duuuh! 3rd stop - bus to Kensington High Street for some shopping 4th stop - Notting Hill for more shopping 5th stop - fancy dress party Key takeaway - as much as I love being a tourist I could never live there again - far too congested and expensive but absolutely fabulous to visit. Am exhausted now and I must say, travelling with two 16 year olds was a challenge but it was worth it. (Photo says it all I think).
