K is for Knowledge This topic is a real passion of mine and it’s one I get asked about A LOT. Martin – where can I go to more information about SAP and its products?   What’s the best way to get trained up?   Brush up on my skills and knowledge?   To be honest it’s an absolute minefield out there.    Google "SAP skills" or "SAP training" and you’ll get hit with an absolute tidal wave of suggestions. And really – good luck with navigating that lot.   Even if you stick with SAP’s own sites – it’s still an overwhelming amount of information and I really wouldn’t blame anyone for just giving up.   So here are my top 3 tips:   #1: Recognise where you are on your journey and what exactly you’re wanting from your knowledge dive. And don’t get distracted by all the information and end up disappearing down rabbit holes. Stay focussed. If you’re an SAP newbie and you want an overview then sap.com/about is a good enough place to start.   If you’re already on your SAP journey and want a bit of a deeper dive then the SAP Help portal is a great resource – and it includes a link to the SAP Community site.   #2: For skills and training you really want to have a plan. Again, google SAP training and you’re going to be overwhelmed with what comes back at you. You must start with a plan. What’s your goal?   Do you want to increase your skills as an end-user? Do you want to get into SAP design and configuration? Are you a Project Manager needing to get to grips with the overall SAP landscape. Are you technical? Or very much functional?    Getting laser focussed on what it is you want to get out of your training will save a lot of wasted time and possibly money in chasing down the wrong training.   #3: Recognise your learning style. We all take on learning & knowledge in different ways. Some of us love the theory and we’re never happier than ploughing through detailed books and manuals and text. Others don’t really “get it” unless we get our hands on the product or are given real world examples and scenarios.    Some prefer solo learning – others prefer the support of being part of a group. There really are a myriad of options – and upskilling in SAP is no different. It should be enjoyable – or at least rewarding.
