In an era of polarization and antagonism, it’s heartening to see that common ground can still be found to save ecologically critical land! From the article: “In central Chile, not far from where the Andes Mountains meet the Pacific Ocean, a vast swath of pristine wilderness is changing hands under the most unusual circumstances. Roberto Hagemann, a Chilean businessman who owns the 325,000-acre property, has agreed to sell the land to his longtime adversaries, a band of upstart environmentalists who spent years thwarting his efforts to develop the property. The price: $63 million. It is a landmark transaction that will preserve some of the most ecologically significant territory in South America. Known as Hacienda Pucheguin, the property is surrounded by national parks and is cut by wild rivers, forests of ancient Alerce trees and the Cochamó Valley, a cathedral of towering granite walls popular with rock climbers around the world. The deal is also a case study in modern-day conservation. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Could Scotland's Flow Country get world heritage status 🤞 The Flow Country in Scotland, a vast expanse of blanket bog located in Caithness and Sutherland, is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. This area, recognized as one of the largest and most intact blanket bog ecosystems in the world, plays a crucial role in carbon storage, water filtration, and #biodiversity support. Blanket bogs are a rare type of peatland that forms in cool, wet climates and spreads over the landscape like a blanket. The Flow Country’s extensive peatlands have been accumulating organic matter for over 10,000 years, resulting in deep peat layers that are significant #carbon sinks. The bid for World Heritage status aims to highlight the global importance of this habitat, ensuring its protection and fostering sustainable tourism and local economic development. This would be an amazing recognition for this important habitat, and could help ensure further investment into restoration projects. The Flow Country Partnership, comprising various environmental and governmental organizations, has led extensive community consultations to align local interests with #conservation goals. One of the main reasons we love Lens is the ability to quickly, easily, and intuitively track projects with satellite imagery. It's also possible to upload drone imagery we have for the sites, and now it's possible to share links publicly. Stay tuned for more to come! But keep in mind trees in most places in the world don't grow nearly this fast, although we are working on scaling up our drone imagery for more sites around the world to track growth in high resolution. The trees in the northern portion of the road grew particularly quickly, we think because there is more underground water and moisture there year round that isn't visible at the surface. Interesting to observe. It's a few hectare site, but super high value land because it serves as a habitat corridor between more intact forests, and soon monkeys could be swinging through! For us non-Portuguese speakers, if Corcovado rings a bell, it’s because of a giant Christ overlooking Rio de Janeiro. Somewhere in Central America, though, the word evokes something different. Corcovado is one of Costa Rica’s 27 national parks, a reserve with limited human intervention that hosts around 2.5% of our planet’s biodiversity and is visited by fewer than 100,000 people per year.  Here, nature dictates everything. The trails, though always the same, are never identical. Off the coast of Torngat Mountains National Park lie subarctic waters where coral gardens, seabirds, and whales flourish. The Inuit who have called this region home for millennia, are leading a proposal for 15,000 sq km of these waters to be protected. If successful, not only will this pristine landscape be a National Marine Conservation Area, but also an Indigenous Protected Conserved Area, the first of its kind. Exciting news from our monitoring efforts within the HABI project! Our partners from Conversano have made a remarkable discovery: a new record of the Mediodactylus kotsckyi gecko species in the SAC Laghi di Conversano. This species, known as the Kotschyi gecko, is typically found only in south-central Apulia and bordering areas of Basilicata in Italy. It primarily inhabits natural environments, especially ecotonal areas, often near dry stone walls, as observed in Monteferraro. Active from March to October, it represents the third gecko species documented in the Conversano area, alongside the more common Common Geckos and the elusive Warty Geckos. Notably, the Mediodactylus kotschyi gecko is a protected species under the Habitats Directive, highlighting the importance of our ongoing conservation efforts. #ProjectHABI #Interreg #Sustainability #ItalyCroatia
