💭 VISIONARY, ENGAGED, NETWORKED - THINKING CITIES FORWARD Today, the Rheinische Post once again published a special edition on the Rheinische Post Forum "Zeitenwende für die Innenstadt"! City centres are facing enormous challenges and climate change in particular requires adjustments. Due to changes in society, the world of work and consumption, city centres will also have to reinvent themselves in the future. For several years now, urban planners and architects, representatives of the construction and finance industries, politicians, associations and the media have been working together in the Rheinische Post Forum "Zeitenwende für die Innenstadt". We are delighted to be part of this interdisciplinary dialogue and to help develop ideas for the future of the city of Düsseldorf. At this year's Polis Convention project and urban development trade fair, the RP Forum invited experts and readers to build their own visions for the two selected Düsseldorf areas of Hauptbahnhof and Wehrhahn in the physical city model and, with the help of artificial intelligence, to think them through in digital visualisation variants. The RP Forum used an AI tool developed by HPP Architekten GmbH for the Polis project. The results of the Polis project and conclusions have now been discussed by the forum participants in an evaluation round. At the same time, it was decided to continue the dialogue. Please read more in the current issue of Rheinische Post. https://lnkd.in/d-Rkm-3 💚 Many thanks again to Pia-Angela Kemper, who is responsible for the lively cooperation of the RP-Forum, also big thanks to the moderator Prof Dr Gernot Wolfram and all other partners involved: the Stadt Düsseldorf, Bahners & Schmitz Gruppe, Greengineers GmbH, Haus und Grund Düsseldorf, RKW Architektur +, Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf. #HPPArchitekten #RethinkingArchitecture #Innovation #NextLevel #AI #digitaltools #UrbanDesign #CoCreative #CollaborativeNetwork #ContinuousProcess #CommonVision #networking #events #rpforum #zeitenwendefürdieinnenstadt Matthias Faber Rebekka Pottgüter Johannes Schwutke Paula Kern

🏙️💡 Leuven becomes a living Urban Lab! 🌍🌳 The Flemish city of stad Leuven has recently adopted a smart city data platform to collect and analyze data on various aspects of city management, such as #wastecollection, #traffic, #pollution, and #noise. This has brought to a collaboration with researchers, policymakers, and citizens, thanks to which it is possible to identify challenges in Leuven and test solutions based on objective predictions. Some of the projects that have already been implemented include projecting preventive messages to reduce noise disturbances, integrating natural elements to lower summer temperatures (check this link to monitor the temperature in a specific area around Leuven: https://www.leuven.cool/), and using AI to simulate the effects of mobility plan changes. Leuven's approach, also adopted by Stad Brugge and Stad Roeselare, has earned them global recognition and inspired other cities to follow suit. This is a great example of how #data and #research can enable innovation and improve the quality of life in urban areas. Adopting measures to make cities smart can be a great way to open the gates to sustainability, #safety and #efficiency. If you want to learn more about smart cities, take a look at our study published by the FIT Milan office: https://lnkd.in/drDTvkAV Check the full article over this specific smart city data platform used in Flanders here: https://lnkd.in/dyDdGyqe #smartcities #sustainability #innovation #citymanagement #lifequality #urbanareas Mohamed Ridouani | stad Leuven | Thomas Van Oppens Stad Brugge | Stad Roeselare Marleen Verstreken | Sophie Massagé Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT)

What a panel to close the #IFAT2024 in Munich and draw some conclusions around “The future of living - adapting to the results of climate change”! The usual noise of a busy exhibition hall was barely noticeable, because two top experts were invited to speak about this topic, reflecting on #Urbanization and #Cities. Prof. Dr. Ian Goldin ( https://lnkd.in/dC7DMzyZ) gave the first keynote and spoke about the impact of inequality, social division, and climate change on cities. Despite these threats and challenges, Golding stressed that we must celebrate cities as source of creativity, hope, and potential. For that it is important to do things in new ways and develop technologies and the engineering to enable us to do that. Very intersting to hear that Germany and Japan have developed a healthy and globally unmatched decentralization, not being so dependant on mega cities, rather powerful regions. Daniel Libeskind (https://lnkd.in/d5azsvT4) then gave us his reasoning for designing iconic buildings and places in cities like New York, Berlin, Dresden, and Milano. He made it clear, why cities need open places where people meet, where culture and arts are developed, and how city architecture and urban planning can reflect on history, presence, and future. I asked Goldin, how important proximity, and density of people in cities still is for innovation, in times where digitalization enables remote collaboration. Based on research he answered that significant innovations still need people to be closely together. And that‘s why cities will not lose their role as powerhouses of economy and creativity. The 75 minutes just flew by. Last week at the Building Centre, an industry panel came together to discuss the role of data in delivering #retrofit at scale. Each speaker set out new tools and approaches to the challenge, illustrated by real-world experience and models. After a welcome by John Bonning, Laura Morgan Forster of Innovate UK chaired the session and kicked off with a look at the changing data landscape – a realm once confined to academia, now harnessed and applied in real-world settings. Laura shared examples of some exciting funded projects, where technology, including ship leak detectors, is being adapted for building assessments, as well as touching on the potential uses of #AI in analysis and decision-making. Jon Abbott shared some of the practical challenges faced in working with data in retrofit, explaining how Keegans use questionnaires to capture information, in tandem with building archetypes, and highlighted the link between the challenges of retrofit and #fuelpoverty. Balázs Csuvár discussed some of our work in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. He showed our 'home-by-home' plan, whereby existing data can be collected from different sources, consolidated and leveraged to prioritise and track the retrofit of thousands of council assets. He outlined DG Cities’ neighbourhood-scale proposition and set out some of the potential advantages in coordinated programmes, from minimising disruption and maximising investment in sites and scaffold, to even offering alternative services for residents while works were underway. He emphasised the value of demonstration projects – if one building in a neighbourhood is successfully delivered, it provides reassurance and can help to encourage uptake of other decarbonisation measures locally. Matthew Paton of Built Environment - Smarter Transformation showcased the company’s work in the field. In one example, he illustrated the role of data-led decision making in the analysis of two council assets: a large Victorian town hall and a much smaller 1960s building. While the assumption might have been that the larger building was the priority to tackle, although expensive and complex to deliver, data insights showed that greater gains could be made in the relatively straightforward upgrading of the smaller structure. Finally, Aneysha Minocha set out QUANTACO's digital platform and underlined the financial dimension of data as part of a wider strategy, exploring its use in assessing the feasibility of commercial retrofit projects – vital, as retrofit can be a hard sell when the cost of demolition and building anew can be cheaper. Each expert brought both fresh perspectives and practical insights to the challenges of retrofitting the 2 million buildings estimated to be in need of upgrading to achieve national #netzero targets. It was great to see such a full house in the Building Centre for the subject, and the talks were followed by plenty of questions and an opportunity for further discussion. Thanks for having us!

𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗧𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗮 We are proud to share the outcome of our latest research project presented by Marco Pozzoni at the European Transport Conference #ETCMilan 2023. Our team, comprised of Marco Pozzoni, Giulia Ceccarelli, Andrea Gorrini, Lorenza Manenti, Luigi Sanfilippo, and Alberto Brignone, worked tirelessly to push forward this initiative that directly impacts our community. 🚀🔬 In our project, we delved into the fascinating world of 𝗧𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺, an innovative approach to urban design to temporarily rejuvenate neglected or misused public spaces, returning them to their original purpose. Our research centred on a specific case study in Comune di Bologna, where a temporary school square was created in a local neighbourhood. 🏙️🎨 We analyzed vehicular traffic dynamics in this area, comparing data before and after the Tactical Urbanism intervention. TomTom data allows us to understand how the intervention influenced traffic flow. 🚗🚶♀️📊 The findings of our research were fascinating. Unlike similar cases, we discovered that the Tactical Urbanism intervention didn't lead to "𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻" but positively influenced vehicular flow in certain adjacent areas. This discovery was significant as it helped debunk some common myths about this type of intervention. 🚗🌆🔄 This project was made possible through the collaboration between Transform Transport, the non-profit research foundation launched by Systematica and CitiEU | CitiME. 🤝🏛️ 📑This research work has been published in: ✅ The 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 (https://lnkd.in/e9jwJG-C); ✅ In the 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 (https://lnkd.in/d-aYQ6R5); Visit our webpage https://lnkd.in/e6mAdtJn to get more information about TomTom Road Analytics products and 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁! Architect, Founder & CEO of architectural studio IND | Member of ISOCARP urban association | 20 years connecting identity and context in modern architecture and urban design
I am attending the Future Urbanism Smart City Summit & Expo. Being integrated with GITEX GLOBAL Largest Tech & Startup Show in the World, the agenda revolves around IT-related topics, which I personally find extremely relevant in today's context, where it is nearly impossible to overlook the role of technology in #masterplanning and #urbandevelopment. Thanks to technology, we have the capability to analyze data, predict climate changes, and formulate concepts that consider potential future shifts. The exhibition also features discussions by experts who delve into big data analysis and the advancement of artificial intelligence, offering insights into what we can anticipate from AI in the next 3-5 years. Moreover, there are talks on how quantum computers are poised to revolutionize the world, given their significantly superior computing power compared to today's most advanced computers. I was particularly glad to meet Martha Schwartz, the Founding Partner at Martha Schwartz Partners, a renowned landscape architect with offices in New York, London, and Shanghai. We previously collaborated with Martha on a masterplan project for PIK Group, and I was impressed by her work approach. Martha extensively discussed the critical issue of #biodiversity and the challenges caused by its exhaustion. Biodiversity is a topic that transcends the domains of landscape design, architecture, and urban planning. It extends to encompass environmental, economic, and even social concerns. Issues such as soil erosion and rising temperatures are set to diminish the availability of quality food and clean water for people in the future. To avert resource conflicts, society must invest in biodiversity now

This was indeed a very inspiring session with very insightful discussions from the audience on mobility space management within cities and possibilites of providing incentives for use of smaller and/or shared vehicles, re-design of infrastructure and the advantages of using more sustainable modes for logistics and good #UMD23
🤩Exciting first day at the Urban Mobility Days #UMD23 in Seville! 🇪🇸 ERTICO CEO, Joost VANTOMME took the stage at the Strategic Session on 'Linking Urban Mobility and Urban Space for Climate Neutrality', moderated by Bárbara Pons Giner, MLA, PhD at the Barcelona City Council. 📌 During the discussion, Joost highlighted the need to connect local authorities with citizens' needs and also the importance of logistics and goods. He addressed the question of how cities can better use data and technology to reallocate urban space, emphasising that data space needs transferability, inclusion, interoperability, and accessibility, which is still missing in the use of public space. Transport mode should be aware of all the spaces around it, and there is a clear need for developing and encouraging more skills, education and upscaling of citizens' knowledge to ensure legacy, not necessarily new features. 🚏🛵 The concept of #MaaS is also central to this dialogue as a powerful tool for seamless multimodal mobility, streamlining ticketing across various modes. Leveraging data and smart traffic management is crucial for dynamic usage, be it for bike sharing, e-scooter systems, EV charging points, or parking solutions. Governance orchestration plays a pivotal role in ensuring the proper derivation and provision of this valuable data. 🔔 Tomorrow, Thursday 5 Oct, we look forward to hearing Dr. Johanna (Yanna) Tzanidaki, Chief Innovation Officer, who will present in the insightful session 'All You Ever Wanted to Know About the Common European Mobility Data Space', moderated by Dim Gkatzoflias from European Commission's DG MOVE. 📍 Will you be there on-site? Join the discussion at 09:30 in Auditorium 2+3. We are also pleased that our colleagues Dr Tamara Djukic & Prisca Numbisi are present in Seville to exchange knowledge and engage in many fruitful discussions this week. Today, I had the honor of presenting our latest research paper, "Understanding the Transit Gap: A Comparative Study of On-Demand Bus Services and Urban Climate Resilience in South End, Charlotte, NC, and Avondale, Chattanooga, TN" at the #PLEA_2024 Conference. Our team, including Babak Rahimi Ardabili, Dr. Mona Azarbayjani, Dr. Srinivas S. Pulugurtha, and Dr. Hamed Tabkhi, conducted a comprehensive study exploring how urban design influences public transit efficiency and sustainability. In this paper, using the TRANSIT-GYM tool, we assessed the impact of increased bus utilization through a potential future smart on-demand bus system on traffic, CO2 emissions, and climate resilience in different urban design settings. These insights are crucial for urban designers and policymakers in developing sustainable urban landscapes. This research not only enhances our understanding of urban transit systems and climate resilience but also lays a solid foundation for my future research endeavors. I am excited to build upon these findings to further explore and develop innovative solutions for sustainable urban development and transportation efficiency. I would like to express my special thanks to my advisors Dr. Mona Azarbayjani and Dr. Hamed Tabkhi for their unparalleled support and guidance in making this opportunity possible.
