Microsoft provides a workaround for admins who haven't installed KB5023705 and need a temporary fix. This requires them to re-add the accidentally removed UUP MIME types manually using PowerShell commands. The missing file extensions can also be added back to impacted servers with the help of using the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager by creating new MIME Types with the ".wim" (application/x-ms-wim) and ".msu" (application/octet-stream) extensions.

Installing Windows Server 2022 (evaltuation at this point) on a remote KVM host for the first time. I used this guide as a starting point: https://lnkd.in/gkrN9FF8 As for giving it full control of the second NIC, I left it unconfigured on the host OS, then before the installation click "add hardware" and add a PCI host device. Pick the NIC from the list of detected PCI devices on the host and away you go. I also like to add a second SATA CD device and load the Redhat virtio storage driver iso in there before starting the install. I gave it 100gb disk (I know it's a lot), 16 cores, and 8gb of RAM so it's beefy.

SSH authentication can be via password or using key pairs. Key pair authentication is by far, more secure than password based authentication. This post will walk you through generating a key pair and using that key pair to remotely access another server.

There are varieties of ways to safeguard the server. One method is to change the default port of ssh from 22 to something else. Because the servers are remote and can be accessed from anywhere, changing the port will add another layer of security because attackers will have to figure out which ports to use before brute forcing the server. Here's a little demonstration. Ubuntu 23.04 is installed on my server. As my new ssh port, I've used 32000 ports. You may utilise any of the remaining unused ports. 𝚜𝚞𝚍𝚘 𝚖𝚔𝚍𝚒𝚛 -𝚙 /𝚎𝚝𝚌/𝚜𝚢𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚖𝚍/𝚜𝚢𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚖/𝚜𝚜𝚑.𝚜𝚘𝚌𝚔𝚎𝚝.𝚍 𝚜𝚞𝚍𝚘 𝚟𝚒𝚖 /𝚎𝚝𝚌/𝚜𝚢𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚖𝚍/𝚜𝚢𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚖/𝚜𝚜𝚑.𝚜𝚘𝚌𝚔𝚎𝚝.𝚍/𝚕𝚒𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚗.𝚌𝚘𝚗𝚏 Content of 𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣.𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛 will go like this, where 32000 is new port. [𝚂𝚘𝚌𝚔𝚎𝚝] 𝙻𝚒𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚗𝚂𝚝𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚖= 𝙻𝚒𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚗𝚂𝚝𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚖=𝟹𝟸𝟶𝟶𝟶 Reloading the services and verifying the work: 𝚜𝚞𝚍𝚘 𝚜𝚢𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚖𝚌𝚝𝚕 𝚍𝚊𝚎𝚖𝚘𝚗-𝚛𝚎𝚕𝚘𝚊𝚍 𝚜𝚞𝚍𝚘 𝚜𝚢𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚖𝚌𝚝𝚕 𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚛𝚝 𝚜𝚜𝚑 𝚜𝚞𝚍𝚘 𝚞𝚏𝚠 𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚘𝚠 𝟹𝟸𝟶𝟶𝟶 # 𝚘𝚙𝚎𝚗 𝚙𝚘𝚛𝚝 𝟹𝟸𝟶𝟶𝟶 𝚜𝚞𝚍𝚘 𝚞𝚏𝚠 𝚍𝚎𝚗𝚢 𝟸𝟸 # 𝚌𝚕𝚘𝚜𝚎 𝚙𝚘𝚛𝚝 𝟸𝟸 𝚜𝚞𝚍𝚘 𝚕𝚜𝚘𝚏 -𝚒 -𝙿 -𝚗 | 𝚐𝚛𝚎𝚙 𝙻𝙸𝚂𝚃𝙴𝙽 # 𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚏𝚢 𝚋𝚢 𝚌𝚑𝚎𝚌𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚘𝚙𝚎𝚗 𝚙𝚘𝚛𝚝𝚜 *Note: Before Ubuntu 22.10, you can use /𝙚𝙩𝙘/𝙨𝙨𝙝/𝙨𝙨𝙝𝙙_𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙜 and changing port 𝟮𝟮 to port 𝟯𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟬 does the trick as prior versions do not use the 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 based ssh. You can connect to ssh remotely with: 𝚜𝚜𝚑 𝚞𝚜𝚎𝚛𝚗𝚊𝚖𝚎@𝚒𝚙_𝚊𝚍𝚍𝚛 -𝚙 𝟹𝟸𝟶𝟶𝟶 # 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚌𝚊𝚗 𝚞𝚜𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚏𝚘𝚛𝚖𝚊𝚝 𝚝𝚘 𝚌𝚘𝚙𝚢 𝚏𝚒𝚕𝚎𝚜 𝚛𝚎𝚖𝚘𝚝𝚎𝚕𝚢 𝚜𝚌𝚙 -𝙿 𝟹𝟸𝟶𝟶𝟶 𝚞𝚜𝚎𝚛𝚗𝚊𝚖𝚎@𝚒𝚙_𝚊𝚍𝚍𝚛:/𝚑𝚘𝚖𝚎/𝚏𝚒𝚕𝚎.𝚝𝚡𝚝 . *EDIT: For more on server security: https://lnkd.in/gW5SShDy
