New client work! As an editor, I often find myself working on projects that help other creative agencies showcase their work. It may sound funny, but the ability to display your work is key to attracting future clients. Without it, you're missing out on potential opportunities. #creativity #editing #marketing

How fast can you edit? Editors often ask me how they can edit faster. Some even boast that they’ve found techniques that allow them to go 15% faster! Or 25% faster! And . . . okay. I get it; the faster you edit, the more editing you can do and therefore the more money you can make. When you’re a newer editor, it definitely takes you longer than when you’re more experienced. After all my years of working with authors, I can spot head-hopping immediately; a newer editor may have to consciously scan for it. So I understand the desire to get better, and therefore faster, at the work. And certainly I’m a big fan of automating the parts of the process that a macro or specialized software can do more consistently and faster than a person can. I mean, I love find + replace for hunting down extra spaces after periods and between words. If I had to find all those myself it would take ages and I’d probably miss a few. But. You are not a machine. If a machine can do what you do, then a machine WILL do what you do and you’ll be out of a job. There is a limit to how fast you can edit (whether developmental editing, line editing, or copyediting) and still do good work. I’m talking about work that requires the knowledge and judgment of a human. Editing takes as long as it takes. So stop focusing on the question of how fast can you edit. What we need to do is charge enough to cover how long it takes. That’s hard, so editors often think going faster would be easier. But at some point you’ll hit that wall where you just can’t go faster and still produce good work. Instead of splatting against that wall, I urge you to step back a bit and commit to doing the hard work of charging what you’re worth. ****** ✨I'm Jennifer Lawler, the Resort Director at Club Ed Freelancers 🌴🌴🌴 🤔I help editors figure out what the hell they're doing 💡I've made all the mistakes so you don't have to 📚Connect with me for editing tips and talk You can ring the 🔔 above to be notified of new posts (most weekdays) #bookediting #freelancing #novelediting

Video Expert 🎥 I Turn Your YouTube Into A 24/7 Leads Machine. Consulted 100+ YouTube Channels To generate More 👀 and 💰.
After talking to 100+ Video editors this year and hiring 25+, here are some tips on how you can win me over as a client. I use a scoring system for the people I work with, this is based on 12 traits and skills These tips help anyone in the service business. - Your first message to me should be about how you are the best at what you do with your 2+ years of experience as a professional editor. Client comes first not you. - Do your research on who you are talking to and make it a personal approach. - Show me your enthusiasm and curiosity about what I as a client do. - Don't beat around the bush and share with me your previous work and clients you've worked with. Especially when I asked before. - Don't beat around the bush with rates, be clear - not "it depends", of course, it depends but ask me more questions about the scope if I haven't provided you enough info. - Be honest, if you can't handle certain scopes, don't let me find out you are not able to when we are working together. This is the fastest way to burn bridges. I've refused to work with people that have great portfolios but horrible ways of talking to clients. I've tried people out cause the way they showed me their enthusiasm and will to work although I've seen stronger portfolios. One of my now in-house editors, I hired full time after working together for 3 months freelance as she showed tenacity, enthusiasm and the will to learn every video. Message me if you want to know what the 12 traits and skills are that I look for in someone I hire.

Being an Assistant Editor is not a path to being a real Editor. It's a path to more AE jobs because that's all anybody knows you can do. I was never an Assistant Editor because I taught myself to edit at home on my own computer before I presented myself AS AN ACUAL EDITOR to Editing Houses and got accepted and started working. 🦸♂️ In fact, I had never even HEARD of Assistant Editors. 😂 I didn't know that was a thing. 🤷♂️ ==== Think of it like a mechanic. Let's say hypothetically there's a job where you bring the tools to the mechanic and then the mechanic fixes the car. If you bring tools to the mechanic for a year, how does that prove to anybody that you can fix a car? 🤔 They're two entirely different skill sets. Nobody's going to hire you to fix their car because you know how to carry tools. ==== It's good that the poster is doing extra work as an actual Editor. 👏😁 The way you get on is BY EXAMPLE! You have to be able to show people what you did so they can decide that you're skilled enough to work on THEIR projects. Except the projects have to be similar. If you edited some Zoom Meeting 😂🤦♂️ it doesn't mean you can edit Unscripted Television. Nobody's going to hire you across genres. They can't afford for you to FAIL and ruin their businesses and reputations. ==== As far as advice, which is what the poster was requesting, do your AE work so you can pay your bills and then reach out to IMPORTANT PEOPLE and offer to do IMPORTANT WORK for them. Everything in this industry works off of Word-of-Mouth Somebody has to tell somebody else that you guided them to a WIN! In order for that to happen, you have to CREATE WINS for important people who will spread the word to other important people and then you will have a career. ==== As far as your hours burning you out, it seems like you accepted a bad deal. 🤷♂️ You'll get better at making deals that work for you. Focus on what you detest and avoid it in the future. It's a step-by-step process. (ooh, baby 🕺 ... sorry... NKOTB joke) Each time you make a bad deal, figure out what was bad about it and don't repeat that. Interestingly, I used to work for an Advertising Agency and all of us used to leave at 4:30pm every weekday. (obviously no weekend work. 👸🤴) When I read these posts, people are talking about 12 hour days and not having any free time and not getting any sleep You just took a bad deal. Do Better for yourself in the future.

Kaila Desjardins (@k.d.editing) https://lnkd.in/gSiuwV_G is another editor I follow on social media. I LOVE her Tuesday Tips! I think for anyone hiring an editor, this tip is so important! "Don't be afraid to ask your editor questions" As an editor, I find it SO important to have good communication with my clients. From the get-go, I love to do either in-person meetings, or meetings over Zoom. I want to get to know my client and most of all, I want them to get to know me! It's an opportunity to ask me questions about my experience and my education. I also want to make sure that I can give my client what they need and that we are a good fit. As I've mentioned in a previous post, asynchronous work is best for me and my schedule. If it turns out that we aren't a good match, this is the perfect opportunity to let them know. Either way, these chats always end up being super fun! -- Kirnjeet Singh-Budhdeo of https://lnkd.in/gzh9XMgR [Alt: Blue sky with white clouds.
