🩸 Emergency Scientific announced the first patient use of its Landmark resuscitative endovascular occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) catheter. 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐊𝐀𝐈𝐑𝐎𝐒 Last week we had the honor to be at the Dutch military base and discuss how we are advancing military medicine with our rapid, point of care Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing device, called KAIROS. We thank the Ministerie van Defensie and the internal innovation team for the invitation to showcase KAIROS in the session of “Innovation for the healthy and the injured”. In military settings, where rapid response and immediate decision-making are paramount, KAIROS can enable accurate and personalized antibiotic treatment strategies. The integration of KAIROS into military medical practice has the potential to save lives, optimize resource utilization, and strengthen the resilience of military healthcare systems. Together with our partners we will be exploring this further. Next week, Center for COMBAT Research team members and research collaborators will be attending the Special Operations Medical Association (SOMA) Training, Education, and Scientific Assembly conference in Raleigh, NC! SOMA’s Scientific Assembly provides a forum for military and civilian medical providers, academia, and industry from around the world to meet and exchange ideas. Attendees from over 17 countries participate in the training, networking and exchange of ideas and experiences that come from the field experience of special operations medics worldwide. It is the largest gathering of Special Operation Forces medical providers in the world that includes U.S. military, foreign military, domestic tactical law enforcement, and tactical emergency medical service providers. Presentations will include topics on: "Evaluation of the Performance of Medical Interventions in Simulated Arctic Conditions", "Impact of Prolonged Care on Mortality Among Major Hemorrhage Casualties in a Resource-Limited Setting", "Scoping Review of Low-Dose Ketamine for the Treatment of Acute Pain", "Strategy to Avoid Excessive Oxygen in Critically Ill Trauma Patients: A Multicenter Randomized Trial" and much more. What does MILMED mean, and who uses this acronym? Informally, MILMED is a contracted version of Military Medicine that is widely recognized within the Department of Defense (DoD). Additionally, there's an excellent journal dedicated to Military Medicine. Thirty-two NATO member nations (welcome, Sweden!) also acknowledge MILMED through their exceptional NATO MILMED Center of Excellence. 𝗗𝗼𝗗 - Within the DoD, phrases such as military medicine, military healthcare, military health system (MHS), or military medical services are commonly used to depict medicine provided for the military and their family members. 𝗔𝗠𝗦𝗨𝗦 - Association of Military Surgeons of the US, The Society of Federal Health Professionals, publishes the Military Medicine journal; it's informally referred to as MILMED or the MILMED journal. AMSUS membership encompasses all healthcare disciplines within at least one of four federal agencies (DoD, VA, HHS, DHS), civilians, and individuals from the military medical services of coalition and partner nations. 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗢 - Internationally, the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine (NATO MILMED COE) consists of four medical branches (Force Health Protection, Interoperability, Lessons Learned-Innovation, Training), each made up of delegates from the Sponsoring Nations. The term MILMED is commonly used among active-duty DoD medical personnel and Veterans with medical training. The MILMED journal serves as a valuable resource for peer-reviewed MILMED articles, and the NATO MILMED COE offers incredible MILMED resources to each member nation.
