If you’re junior or mid-level, you probably think observability is boring. No! It’s relatively new that SWE and MLE teams own services end to end rather than building things and handing them off to a DevOps team to deploy and manage. Hand-offs result in slowdowns. Classical software engineers had this problem first… and then DS teams started to face it years later for the exact same reasons and people were still surprised. Well now, more and more teams own their products from development to production and back. Many companies do not even hire “traditional DevOps” teams anymore. Without the handoffs, development is so much faster! And more fun imo. AND YET It’s so rare that software engineers and MLEs are good at observability. I’ve never had a coworker below the senior level of seniority who had so much as set up an alert before. If an outage happens in your app, do you know how to find out what went wrong? Do you have systems in place that could have detected the outage risk before it ever happened? Do you know what traces are? Or structured logs? Have you created alerts from generic and custom metrics? Do you know why you should avoid creating many alerts, and what items you should focus on? And you need all of this and *more* if you’re doing ML/AI in a production, high-risk setting. The need for observability hasn’t gone away even while handoffs are less common. And in a crowded job market, having experience with observability can be a major differentiator. I’m always majorly impressed with this skill set. Bennett is a senior site-reliability engineer. He also worked AWS support earlier in his career, covering API Gateway, S3, and Lambda. He will be leading the observability section in the Python/AWS bootcamp and he is the *perfect* person for the job. I’m going to learn a lot from Bennett’s section, too, and personally this is the unit I’m most excited about!
I haven't posted about it directly, but I have written week 4 of a cloud bootcamp organized by 🎧 Eric Riddoch! We have closed out the first cohort signup but if this interests you, check it out. --> https://mlops-club.org/ My section is on Observability. I introduce SRE, basic observability methodology, and apply the theory to the API that is built earlier in the bootcamp. If you didn't know, I attribute getting my role at AWS to a bootcamp (shoutout Noah King) and the projects that came out of it. That's even how I met Brian Schuster who was my manager at IBM! Of course the market is way different now, but I still think there is a lot of value for the right people.
