Rethinking instead of demolishing ... that was the motto of yesterdays's panel at the Akademie der Künste. The building in question, the high rise building An der Urania, was built by Werner Düttmann in the 1960's. Architectural and Cultural Significance: The skyscraper is a testament to Berlin's rich architectural history. During the discussion, its role in shaping the city's cultural identity was emphasized. Furthermore the building consists of reinforced concrete and an intact skeleton structure. Climate Considerations: Renovating and repurposing existing structures align with contemporary climate goals, reducing the environmental impact associated with demolition and new construction. The conversation showed how preserving our cultural heritage and embracing sustainable practices go hand in hand. The high-rise building from Werner Düttman could function as a leading example of how preserving building culture and building substance can work for a responsible urban development. In support of experimental building types…I love the notion that the International Building Code could adopt a new classification and use for “e - Experimental” buildings. #modernarchitecture #experimentalbuildings #makearchitecturebetter

It is fascinating to me that US #buildingcode and adjacent officials refuse to even acknowledge how we plan buildings in the US is a global anomaly resulting in inferior outcomes, or even *discuss* the topic of Point Access Blocks rationally - instead delving into false statements and appeals to emotion that are not rooted in research or fact... However, in Germany - where rationality, performance, and science tend to be adopted into codes and prioritized - there's an ongoing discussion about a new Building Class 'Gebaeudeklasse E' - short for Einfach (simple), or Experimental. The intent of this new building class is to allow lower cost but safe housing that meets climate goals, a minimum life safety threshold, and lower cost in the face of rising costs due to inflation and other issues. In a world where #reuse, #circularconstruction, #climateadaptation, and housing shortages are competing with high interest rates, incredibly high construction costs (especially compared to peer countries), and onerous and duplicative building codes - having a glide path to provide safe, high performance buildings with a lighter touch seems like something we should Explore. I feel like I'm in good company here. For several years, I've been advocating to modify our codes so they match what is already allowed in Seattle or Honolulu - so that we can build more #accessible, higher quality, more #livable, and more climate adaptive #housing (slowly, slowly!). This push for simpler building codes in Germany is also being shepherded by architects and associated chambers like the Bayerische Architektenkammer. Perhaps we can get the The American Institute of Architects (AIA) on board with similar efforts. #citiesforpeople #stadtplanung #codereform #advocacy #bettercities #livablecities https://lnkd.in/gK5Q8QaE

The Northern Railway Diagnostic Center, spread over 3500 SF is an adaptive reuse stand-alone block that breathes life into a dilapidated ancillary building of the Northern railway central hospital campus. This design approach aims to significantly reduce the stress levels for patients, creating a soothing atmosphere, exuding a sense of tranquility and promoting patient comfort. The large transparent entrance lobby is adorned with warm healing colours in beige and brown shades and smooth curved forms that have been derived from neuro-aesthetic design principles. The user-centric approach ensures minimal exposure to natural light for accurate readings of shades of grey for precise diagnoses in the diagnostic rooms. Illuminated skylights with natural colours, patterns, and lighting have been incorporated to ease patients psychologically. #CDArchitecture #WeareCDA #ArchitectureDesign #DiagnosticCenter #AdaptiveReuse #Repurposing #InnovativeDesign #InteriorDesign #HealingSpaces #Architecture #Design #PatientCare

PhD Candidate in Patient Wayfinding at TU Delft | Founder & CEO of Eyedog | Innovator in Hospital Wayfinding Design Solutions
Without a solid communication framework surrounding appointments, your wayfinding design is already compromised... In healthcare wayfinding design, communication is paramount. An essential component is an appointment communication framework. Within this framework, you convey appointment details, what to bring, how to prepare, and most importantly, how to get to the appointment. This is the absolute top request from patients. The latter involves curated information gathered from various sources, personalized to the patient's needs (travel modality, parking options, which entrance, indoor wayfinding) and presented in a linear way. Touchpoints exist in both analog and digital formats, with continuous cross-over moments from digital to analog and vice versa throughout the entire journey. Wayfinding design in healthcare is both physical and digital, but digital first. #phygital #digitalfirst #wayfindingdesign #hospitals

Designing an efficient, patient-centered hospital for the future The first central hospital built in Finland since the 1970s, Hospital Nova represents a new generation of healthcare designed to give a unique experience for patients and staff. JKMM was responsible for the principal design, architectural design, ‘hot hospital’ design and interior architecture, working alongside a hospital specialist. Hospital Nova is built around an innovative concept of four distinct functions which are organized around a central walkway more akin to a shopping mall or an airport. The hospital is standardized throughout, improving efficiency in processes, spaces, technical installations and equipment, allowing full flexibility for future expansion or change. Moreover, changes in logistics design and operation have delivered a significant 10% reduction in annual operating costs. https://lnkd.in/ethUTwVn #archicad #macos #bim #architecture #enginering
