ISRAEL: DISCOVERY OF A 3300 YEAR OLD SHIPWRECK FAR FROM THE COAST PROVES THAT ANCIENT SAILORS COULD NAVIGATE BY THE STARS! A 3,300-year-old ship was discovered off the Israeli coast, the oldest ever found in deep waters. Researchers say the location of this wreck, carrying hundreds of intact storage vessels, proves Late Bronze Age mariners could journey far out to sea. The discovery of the remains of the ship from the 14th-13th century BCE proves that ancient mariners could navigate the seas without a line of sight to the shore, contrary to what was previously believed, the IAA said. The vessels extracted from the sea floor will be on display during pre-opening tours of the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein National Campus for the Archaeology of Israel in Jerusalem. In Puerto Concordia, Colombia, nestled near the headwaters of the Amazon River, lies a realm shrouded in mystery – ancient civilizations concealed within the dense embrace of the jungle. For years, ongoing conflicts between the Colombian government and FARC rendered these jungles off-limits to anthropologists, until advancements in Lidar sonar technology and recent peace treaties granted access to these once-impenetrable realms. Among the discoveries, hieroglyphics adorned with depictions of colossal sloths, serpents, jaguars, and scenes of ancient voyages offer captivating glimpses into the belief systems and daily lives of these long-lost societies, whose populations may have numbered in the millions. Some artifacts, carbon-dated to 15,000 years ago, attest to the antiquity of these civilizations, while many of their hidden cities remain veiled within the depths of the unfathomable jungle, awaiting the discoveries and revelations yet to come.

Previous knowledge of how ships traded suggested that voyages were made from port to port, rather than across open expanses of sea, with those on board still able to see the shore. However, this discovery has shed light on the advanced navigational skills of ancient mariners, demonstrating their ability to undertake open-sea voyages across the Mediterranean. These journeys, conducted without any visual reference to the shore, required exceptional navigational expertise, as mariners would have only the horizon as their guide. #Shipping #Trade #History https://lnkd.in/d5DWKpCU

Cold War satellite images reveal nearly 400 Roman forts Declassified Cold War-era spy satellite images have led researchers to identify 396 previously unknown Roman forts in Syria and Iraq. The research points towards a vibrant network supporting trade and cultural exchange rather than a rigid border defense system. The discovery builds upon the pioneering work of French Jesuit priest Father Antoine Poidebard, who, in the 1920s, conducted one of the world’s first aerial archaeological surveys, documenting 116 forts along what was believed to be the eastern boundary of the Roman Empire. Casana’s team identified 396 forts scattered across the Syrian steppe, far exceeding Poidebard’s count. The newfound forts, distributed both east-to-west and north-to-south, challenge the notion of a strict border and indicate a more fluid and interconnected Roman frontier... Lighthouses have guided sailors since ancient times, with early examples found in ancient Egypt and Greece. The Pharos of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was a monumental lighthouse constructed around 280 BCE. Throughout history, lighthouses evolved from simple fires atop towers to sophisticated structures with powerful lamps and lenses. They played a crucial role in maritime navigation, warning ships of dangerous coastlines and guiding them safely to port. With advancements in technology, such as automated lights and GPS, many historic lighthouses have been decommissioned but remain iconic symbols of maritime heritage and coastal landscapes. #LighthouseLove #GuidingLight #CoastalBeacons #BeaconsOfHope #LighthouseViews
