Initially built in 1520, The Prospect of Whitby still stands today on the River Thames in Wapping. 🌊 The pub had a notorious past and was known as 'the Devil's Tavern' through its association with thieves and smugglers. Its name was changed to 'The Prospect of Whitby' in 1777.
Decent boozer with, unfortunately, too many tourists now. Still has the original flagstone internal floor in the back bar.
This building was only 56 years old when my 10x Great granny Isabella CROFT was born 1576 in 'Skipton-in-Craven', Yorkshire. I love my ancient ancestry :)
Passed this many times. It’s a strange name for a London pub!
Very old pewtar topped bar and a hangman’s noose outside on the river side
It's a belting old-fashioned London boozer.
Enjoyed a pint here whilst on site around corner at St Katherines Dock a few years back
Always look forward to the daily posting from Historic England it showcases so much of our wonderful and obscure history - thank you.
Fascinating! A 500-year-old pub with a scandalous past? Love how it's transformed from "Devil's Tavern" to a riverside landmark. Must visit for a pint steeped in history!
This used to be on my run route. One day when the Thames was low I went onto the river bank behind the pub and saw this gallows for the first time. Presumably this isn’t authentic? Or is it?

1moOne of my lovely locals. Wapping is a place like no other and this is one of several beautiful historic parts that preserves its character. We need to keep cherishing what creates the beating heart of place and communities
