On the way back from football at San Siro last night I went to visit Milan's bus station* in the outer suburb of Lampugnano - it also features a large P&R car park connected to the metro, but on matchdays special buses connect it to the stadium too. In 2019 London was considering relocating its central Victoria Coach Station to somewhere peripheral, perhaps z2 Royal Oak. Improvements in air quality & coach speeds were the obvious benefits; convenience the major downside, plus localised impacts on residential streets. However one point perhaps overlooked - Road Safety Audits should be applauded for writing in the night-time element - is that the perception of a potential location, as well as its actual accessibility, can vary wildly day vs night. Neither Royal Oak nor Lampugnano have Night Tube; to make such a location accessible 24/7 by public transport would require enormous investment, yet without this the alternatives are buses (perceived as harder to navigate), or taxis (more costly). Finally, if passengers are embarking on journeys the length of Italy or beyond, facilities are important, and when a terminal is unstaffed, it shows. (*Italian part of my family is still fully working out what 'mixing business and pleasure' means for me)
