I honestly don't think there is a crisis in hiring 'good' software engineers. There are so many requirements, competition, hoops to jump through and so on, already. I think there is a crisis in hiring 'good' software engineering managers, project managers, and other middle managers, whose job it is to make an environment that is optimal and supportive for software engineers to do their best work. The idea that even a supposed 'rockstar' individual software engineer can make that much difference, or even perform their role satisfactorily at all in a bad or ill-suited environment, is the one that needs to die. #software #industry

I want to put together a lean and advanced team to build out some really awesome capabilities for the Defense and Civic Technology ecosystems. This cluster of initiatives are extremely non-traditional; they're focused on creating relevant features that enhance mission outcomes, that users enjoy and are eager to adopt. No box checking. ➡ Looking for Product Managers that have a bias for "commercialization". ➡ Looking for Full-stack Engineers that are eager to build data-intensive applications with some lightweight data engineering tasks. The pay, benefits, culture, and advancement opportunities are legitimately spectacular. This high-impact team will help discover and influence company direction in a lot of ways. These are some attributes that I think a person should have to enjoy this environment and experience: 💠 Love of craft - these are challenging capability needs with policies and environmental constraints that make development and prioritization challenging - by understanding and loving your discipline, I think it will help reduce the complexity of the problems that are being solved. 💠 Genuinely being proactive - every role will have a level of ownership, leadership, and inspiration. Always be trying to move the product forward; understand quality / speed tradeoffs. I think a person that's in love with their craft and willing to collaboratively share their candid opinions with others will help move these complex missions forward. 💠 Focus on operationalization - this isn't an R&D program or a situation where a legacy system can fester. The products you will be building need to be deployed and operationally accepted, ASAP. This environment simulates a real commercial market (but in the Public Sector) more closely than any other program I've supported. 💠 Few Assumptions - because of the speed and scrappiness of this team, I think being extremely self-aware and keeping assumptions in check would be very beneficial. The team should be eager to research and test their assumptions to reduce risk for operationalization. 💠 Fun and Friendly - delivery is hard, there's a major emphasis on reducing as much nonsense as possible so we can build cool stuff. This is a goofy and fun environment. Pace, time, and structure is all very negotiable. It's genuinely all about creating dependable outcomes with our software. Internal hiring strategy to find senior software engineering talent from Codingscape CTO Jimmy Jacobson 🎯 "Our leadership team at Codingscape used a Mark Twain book to shape our internal hiring process. Here’s how the “Tom Sawyer approach” came about and why it works: One of the most famous sections from “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” is when Tom Sawyer gets in trouble and has to whitewash his fence. Naturally, he’s annoyed he has to waste a perfect summer day doing something boring instead of playing outside. Later, some other kids visit to make fun of Tom. But Tom just ignores them and cheerfully continues painting. When the other kids ask what he’s doing, Tom goes, “I’m painting my aunt’s fence. It’s the most fun thing I’ve ever done.” The other kids don’t believe him but Tom is persistent. Eventually, someone says, “Well, if it’s so fun, I want to try.” Tom feigns resistance but eventually gets him a paintbrush. Soon, he has all the kids happily painting the fence for him! So how does this apply to hiring? Well, when we’re writing up a job description, we share it with our close network for feedback since they’ll likely know people who are a good fit. But 9 times out of 10? Someone within our close network will read the job description and say, "Hey, I want to do this job." This has happened enough times that we’ve coined it the Tom Sawyer approach. We show someone how fulfilling it is to work at Codingscape by having them do a consulting project with us or reviewing a job description, and if they say they want to do it, we let them do it. This especially works well with people who ran their own businesses previously, as they have multiple skill sets and can transition between different roles and responsibilities. At the end of the day, the fence gets painted and everyone is happy."
