At Guidepost, the preparation for literacy starts from the very beginning and gradually expands. The process includes: 💡 A language-rich environment, starting as an infant in our Nido program. 💡 Building phonemic awareness through sound games in our Toddler program 💡 Sensory materials like the sandpaper letters and moveable alphabet are used in Children's House. They captivate the child's focus and teach her to connect the sounds she hears in spoken words to the letters she sees on the page. 💡 In the Capstone Year of Children's House (kindergarten), the child often has an explosion of reading. She starts to read books for comprehension, study the function of different words, and move on to more advanced grammar—much of which her peers in traditional schools will not study until 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd grade. Reading and writing are sometimes taken for granted because we, as adults, can do it effortlessly. But, looking at it from a child’s perspective, reading and writing require hard-won skills that take many years of practice to master. The Montessori approach uses a distinct set of practices that nurture a positive, natural learning experience to teach reading and writing.
