There are several factors that affect whether a TBM will be re-used at the end of a project for a subsequent project. Various parts of TBMs tend to suffer considerable wear in excavating and constructing any tunnel project and their useful remaining life may not be sufficient to make refurbishment and re-use worthwhile. It may also depend on whether there is a suitable project in the near future in the same city. In some cases, the TBM manufacturer will "buy back" the TBM at the end of the project and repurpose it. For example, in Victoria at present, the two TBMs that were used for the West Gate Tunnel project are being stripped of their mechanical components for reuse but the circular steel structure and other structural steelwork in the supporting gantries are being scrapped. In some recent rail tunnel projects in Sydney, the TBMs have been fully refurbished for reuse on other rail tunnel projects in Sydney. TBMs are also manufactured to suit the particular ground conditions for the project. At this stage, there are no plans for any similar road tunnels in the future in Adelaide. #infrastructure #tunnelboringmachine #tbm

🚇 | Implenia JV selected to deliver Swiss ‘bottleneck’ relief rail tunnel scheme Switzerland’s rail infrastructure operator SBB CFF FFS has appointed the IBD joint venture, formed by Implenia, Bernasconi and Deluca Corporation, to deliver a key contract on the Ligerz Tunnel project. The CHF220M (£198M) deal involves: 👉Construction of a 2.1km long double-track tunnel 👉1,850m will be formed by mining techniques 👉around 250m by cut-and-cover. 👉Four escape tunnels 👉114m long viaduct for the exit of highway N5 👉Various additional structures are being built under the contract. The aim of the work is to remove the last bottleneck on the Jurafuss line between Lausanne and Biel. Eppenberg SBB Railway Tunnel - From #installation to the #breakthrough A Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), often referred to as a "mole" or "worm," is an advanced apparatus used for tunneling through rock, soil, or sand. This technology offers a sophisticated alternative to traditional methods such as drilling, blasting, and manual excavation. TBMs are instrumental in minimizing ground disturbance and producing smooth tunnel walls, thereby reducing the costs associated with tunnel lining. The Eppenberg is one of the traffic bottlenecks in the #Swiss railway network. The consortium ARGE Marti Eppenberg, under the direction of Marti Tunnel, is building the approximately 2.6 km long #tunnel. For more than 2.5 years, Marti Solothurn and Marti Zürich have been working on the portal areas with extensive special civil engineering and concrete work. The efficient and powerful infrastructure of the installation sites is the central part for a successful realization.
