A new study from EY's Juan Uro and Samir Jaipati points to a dramatic shift in both the makeup of the CFO’s role in an organization and the career trajectory of today’s CFO, changes that both financial leaders – and the organizations that rely on their expertise – need to prepare for.

As demands for CFOs’ time increases, CFOs are relying on their internal finance team members for help. When asked who their most valuable team members were, 57% said the head of FP&A. Nearly half (49%) named their controller/chief accounting officer (CAO) as well. From a global perspective, one interesting finding is that North American CFOs were much more likely (67%) to rely on their CAOs. No other region came close to that figure, with the next-most reliant on CAOs being CFOs in Asia/Asia Pacific markets. I just did something outside my comfort zone, and I wanted to share. The IMA | Institute of Management Accountants is calling for speakers for their #2024 Accounting & Finance Conference in June in San Antonio, TX. The conference has great specialty tracks for all manners of technical and soft skills for today's management accountants. I could have submitted topics on a number of important issues, but I chose to be courageous and speak directly from my heart. My submission? "Leadership & Vulnerability: Great Leaders Ask for Help (and Know Where to Find it)" Why did I submit this topic? I truly believe that great leaders must learn to vulnerable and authentic with themselves and the world around them to be at their best. I hope to start conversations that inspire others to be courageously vulnerable. I may not make the speaker's cut, but I'm proud of myself for submitting and will look for other opportunities to speak from the heart to other professionals. More than one quarter (28%) of finance chiefs at large companies said their organizations have no formal CFO succession plans, according to a recent survey by Big Four firm Deloitte. The dearth of succession plans comes as the  CFO turnover at public companies has soared this year.
