I have been speaking to d&i Leaders (Diversity and Inclusion Leaders) about how we can recognise and reward #employeenetworks. In this piece, I discuss the importance of employee networks with Jo Faragher (she/her), but we also examine why they are often undervalued. I think that’s mainly because employers can see employee networks as passion projects. This hugely undervalues the work of the network and the people within it, don’t you think⁉ I want to encourage employers to provide network leaders with protected time to fulfil the additional work and ensure that the work takes place during working hours. I also think that many network leads are looking for visibility. Employers can fulfil this by inviting network leads to present their work, achievements and successes to the senior team and feature their work in internal and external communications. You may think that workplace culture is not an issue anymore right? Well, it turns out, it's still the biggest headache for the HR department this year, even more than hiring or training This article cited a survey from HR Dive, where 490 HR professionals weighed in, and culture topped the list of struggles https://lnkd.in/g8bkuauD One expert, Mark Scullard, pointed out that while we love structured, scalable solutions in the corporate world, people are messy and diverse. It’s so true – dealing with human issues is never straightforward. One of the big points was about trust. Scullard also mentioned something called a "trust intervention," which helps when employees feel out of control or blindsided by changes. Managers need to understand what their teams are really struggling with, or trust breaks down, leading to even more issues. And feedback – oh boy, that’s always a tough one. He said feedback is emotional, and it can easily feel judgmental. So, managers need training on how to give it properly. Most haven’t been trained in this area, which just adds to their stress. Better feedback can improve relationships and performance, which is crucial. Scullard also talked about the importance of recognizing employees’ contributions. Apparently, lack of recognition is a major reason people look for new jobs. So, managers, who are the first line of leadership, need to acknowledge their teams more. It's all about building a culture where everyone feels valued.. It's such a complex issue, but with the right strategies, it can really transform a workplace.
