Quarries offer a wide variety of habitats and support many endangered and/or protected species. But to truly move from biodiversity loss to gain, a concerted effort is needed by everyone, working together in the recovery of nature at a landscape scale. So today we launched the sixth edition of the Quarry Life Award, our nature-based competition, across more than 15 countries worldwide. Researchers, students, local communities, NGOs, and nature lovers from around the world can pitch ideas for sustainable quarry management and compete for prizes. Together with partner organisations such as BirdLife International, we aim to raise awareness of biodiversity associated with extraction sites and nature as a whole, underlining our commitment to the Global Goal for Nature and making a positive contribution to nature. At the European level, we have been supporting the ambitious targets of the EU Nature Restoration and believe that by restoring EU land and sea areas on a large scale can we ensure the long-term sustainability and viability of our society and economy. http://spkl.io/60404AgDq

Ecosystem restoration emerges as a pivotal nature-based solution to address the pressing challenges of the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and water scarcity. Beyond its ecological significance, restoration exerts both direct and indirect positive impacts on economy and human well-being. In Brazil, the Instituto Socioambiental - ISA , a non-profit Brazilian civil society organization established in 1994, has been actively engaged in Amazon restoration for 20 years. ISA is an Actor of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and actively contributes to its objectives. Through the implementation of the ‘Muvuca’ restoration method and the strengthening of community-based native seed networks, ISA has championed ecological restoration with a focus on high biodiversity. This approach fosters the economy of sociobiodiversity with the native seed market and the well-being of seed collectors while safeguarding traditional territories and knowledge. How can you be sure that green facades promote biodiversity? 🌿 Living walls play a crucial role in promoting biodiversity in urban environments. These vertical gardens, covered with vibrant plants, provide a refuge for various species of insects, birds, and other small animals. The vegetation on green facades provides insects with food sources and shelter, thus encouraging their populations. In collaboration with SGS, Mobilane introduces the DNA InsectScan. Measure the impact of living walls on biodiversity through this method. ⬇ Read more about DNA InsectScan #LivingWalls #GreenFacades #DNAInsectScan #SGS #Insects #Biodiversity

"Nearly 150 Indigenous seed collectors from the Amazonian Bioeconomic Seed Network, the first of its kind in the state of Rondônia, traveled to neighboring Mato Grosso state to meet with Brazil’s oldest network of seed collectors, the Xingu Seed Network. In the absence of a government-led program, exchanges like these between existing grassroots groups have been the best way to help newer networks gain expertise and consolidate themselves as organizations, with technical training and management strategies." Indigenous seed collectors are growing a network to support ecosystem restoration across Brazil, reports Kevin Assunção Damásio for Mongabay Brasil. Nearly 150 Indigenous seed collectors from the Amazonian Bioeconomic Seed Network recently met with Brazil’s oldest network of seed collectors, the Xingu Seed Network. In the absence of a government-led program, exchanges like these between existing grassroots groups have been the best way to help newer networks gain expertise and consolidate themselves as organizations, with technical training and management strategies. The seed collector networks are the base of the ecological restoration chain and will play an essential role in enabling Brazil to reach its goal of restoring 12.5 million hectares of native vegetation by 2030, which aims to strengthen the resilience of ecosystems and their ability to provide environmental services like capturing carbon and preserving biodiversity. Brazil’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change says it hopes to implement a national plan of action this year aimed at filling the gaps in the restoration chain, by expanding forest cover, incentivizing certain sectors of the economy, and developing financial mechanisms. https://lnkd.in/eBj8SVZ2

Global biodiversity markets are emerging mechanisms aimed at incentivizing and promoting conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. These markets are designed to provide financial incentives for individuals, communities, and organizations to protect and restore ecosystems and biodiversity. Here are some examples. 1. #Biodiversity #Offsets:These are market-based mechanisms where developers or companies compensate for their environmental impacts by investing in biodiversity conservation or restoration projects elsewhere. For example, a mining company might offset its habitat destruction by funding the restoration of a #wetland in another location. 2. Biodiversity Certificates:Similar to carbon credits, biodiversity certificates are tradable units representing a quantified amount of biodiversity protection or restoration. These certificates can be bought and sold to support conservation projects. An example is the Biodiversity Habitat Exchange in the United States. 3. Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) Programs:PES programs involve paying landowners or communities for the services their ecosystems provide, such as clean water, #carbon #sequestration, or biodiversity #conservation. These programs can have a global impact when they involve international stakeholders. 4. #GreenBonds:Issued by governments, institutions, or companies, green bonds raise capital specifically for environmentally friendly projects, including those focused on biodiversity conservation and habitat restoration. 5. #Wildlife Credits:Some regions have introduced wildlife credit trading systems to support conservation efforts. For instance, a landowner who maintains a healthy population of a threatened species on their property may earn credits that can be sold to developers or other parties impacting the same species elsewhere. 6.#EcoCertifications and #EcoLabels:While not traditional markets, certifications like Fair Trade, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and others promote biodiversity conservation by rewarding businesses that adhere to sustainable and biodiversity-friendly practices. 7. #Community-Based Conservation #Enterprises: These initiatives involve local communities participating in biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource management while generating income through the sale of products like sustainably harvested timber, non-timber forest products, or ecotourism services. 8.#Conservation #Auctions: Some organizations host auctions to raise funds for biodiversity conservation. Participants bid on various conservation projects, with the proceeds going to support these initiatives. 9. #Global #Conservation #Funds:International organizations and funds like the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF) allocate substantial resources to support biodiversity conservation projects worldwide. These examples illustrate the diverse range of mechanisms and initiatives that make up global biodiversity markets.

I'm passionate about using BNG metrics for enhancing biodiversity in developments, but remember—it’s just one piece of the ecosystem puzzle. Don’t forget about soil; it’s a powerhouse, home to 59% of all life! While BNG metrics are useful, they barely scratch the surface. We need to dive deeper and consider the entire ecosystem in our development plans. https://lnkd.in/ewYGrJwC

I love how connected all of our work is. Sharing one of Sangeeta Mangubhai's most recent papers below which has some interesting findings (extracts below and full paper in Sangeeta's post below) in relation to marine management and tourism that would benefit from further research. Get in touch if you're working in this space and would like to discuss further. "Our models suggested that two other contextual variables, proximity to tourist hubs and trust in government, also distinguished adopters from non-adopters. Villages closer to tourism hubs were less likely to have joined the LMMA Network, perhaps because of conflicting priorities and dependence on tourism revenue and thus saw comparatively less advantage in joining LMMA. Across Fiji, tourism hotels and resorts have diverse management arrangements, with ownership ranging from external or foreign corporations to locally owned and managed. We did not survey the hotels to identify Indigenous ownership and suggest further research on the relationship between Indigenous-led tourism and LMMA adoption. Some tourism hubs also have marine protected areas established through traditional tabu (Mangubhai et al., 2020), making entry into the LMMA Network redundant with existing management practices."
Delighted to share this paper led by Arundhati Jagadish and co-authors Morena Mills Margaret Tabunakawai Vakalalabure Alifereti Tawake Tanya O'Garra Michael B. Mascia on ... Scaling Indigenous-led natural resource management Rights-holders, practitioners, and researchers recognize the importance of Indigenous-led resource management for building a more ecologically just world and addressing climate change and biodiversity loss. Yet, it remains unclear how to support them in a way that increases their spatial extent and ensuring impact on equitable biodiversity conservation. We address this gap by using Diffusion of Innovations theory to explain the rapid spread of an Indigenous-led network of Locally Managed Marine Areas in Fiji. We found that 74.9 percent of adopters had a previous adopter as their nearest neighbor, and that despite contrasting patterns of adoption at the island level, such patterns could be accounted for by: perceived relative advantage, village chiefly status, distance to tourism hotspots, and presence of district-level management committees, support organizations, and trust. These insights can inform the design and implementation of Indigenous-led approaches that can scale appropriately and respond to the global environmental crisis. https://lnkd.in/gUTedzHt
